Okay guys. This is my 1000th post, so I'm gonna try to make it halfway decent. Thanks to all the Finheaven members who have been cool to me over the years. This board is the absolute BEST for Dolphins fans to get up-to-the-minute news and to have great discussions about our team. Also, thanks to all the mods for always working hard to make this a better place to post, even though I get infractions almost monthly, sometimes for inane or petty reasons.

Anyway, after watching the final 2 games before the Super Bowl, I noticed some plays being called by all the teams throughout the playoffs, but not being called by us really ever.

First of all, we run a ton of WR bubble screens and those do well sometimes. But, I noticed a couple of teams pump-fake the bubble screen to one sideline and toss it to the other sideline or hand it off in a draw. It seemed to work very well every time, as some of the defensive players would always sell out to stop that screen, leaving the middle of the defense and moreso the opposite side of the defense much more open. Heck, I even remember Brees completing one of these screens to the opposite side, then follow it up a few plays later with a double-pump-fake, one to each sideline, then a completed bomb down the middle (may have even been a TD....don't remember).

Also, once we establish a decent passing game, and I feel Henne showed us that he can make that happen, do you think that we will use the draw play a little more? If called at the right time, the draw can lead to a big run. It can also open the playcalling up to fake draws (is that still considered play-action?) and therefore some big pass plays.

Anyway, my question to you guys is, since we have retained our offensive coordinator (ugh), what kind of plays would you like to see Henning add to our game plans next year? Besides what I described above, I really think we should add more HB screens. Ronnie excels in that area, but it seemed we rarely did it (except the notorious call for Polite to take one of those....disaster).

I lied. I have another question. Is the pump fake something that is called sometimes (besides in the scenarios described above where it is an integral part of the play) or is that all on the QB to decide when to do it? Like when Dirty Sanchez threw that pass to a wide open Edwards yesterday. Did he make the decision to pump-fake or did Schottenheimer call it as part of the play? I noticed Henne did not use the pump-fake much last year and I'm wondering if that is on him or Henning. I'm hoping Henne and David Lee will work on the pump-fake this offseason, along with the touch pass.

One last bonus question. How many times did I type "pump-fake" in this post?

I agree with a lot of the things you brought up. As innovative as Henning as been for us, it seems he lacks "modern" innovation in his offense. As you noted, a lot of bigtime teams have used things like pump-faking on bubble screens or using draws (I think the Cowboys are big on the pump-fake to draw move, and I've seen it work well). Hopefully Henning adds a little more variety to the offense this coming season (besides Pat White and "The Pistol" lol). Good post bro!

6 Times. 7 with the Title.

I've been calling for a more extensive use of the screen all season. We suck at calling them. We run one HB screen a game and the 'great' bubble screen to bess. No one else. Maybe one day we will figure it out.

Agreed, we could definitely use more type of screen plays. I wouldn't mind seeing ronnie get in some open space with 3-4 blockers ahead of him or even Cobbs, screens can nullify the pressure of Henne having to drop back 50 times and throw 5-15 yards down the field all the time.

This whole discussion I believe still hinges on whether or not we get some sort of weapon on offense that teams fear OTHER than Ronnie Brown. If we want to run more screens to HBs and draws, we need to have a player at WR or TE that the opposing defense has to focus on IN ADDITION to Brown.

Let the debate for a #1 receiver begin in 3, 2, 1.... lol

You make some good points and observations. The pump fake should be an essential part of a QB's toolbox.

I completely agree and there will be a lot of people on here that do not think Ronnie Brown is a special player. So many posts theorizing RB getting traded on this board, I feel, are uncalled for. But I digress. This thread is about expanding our playbook in order to make bigger and better plays with our current weapons.

Yes, I agree we need a big bodied WR to go over the middle on slants and for jump balls on deep passes/fades. I'm one of the few holding out hope for Patrick Turner, but I have my Trojan bias. But, I wanna know if you have any ideas on different offensive looks or plays for who we have now, (ie. hurry-up offense at unexpected times or lining up Henne in shotgun formation on 1st down sometimes). Maybe one of Henning's cronies will eventually read this awesome board and get some ideas (I know, that's an armchair QB wet dream).

something else you missed on is we need a real change of pace running back i love both ronnie and ricky, but they are same rb's we need a real change of pace back look at the jets jones/leon or greene, rashard/parker, most of the teams have thunder and lightning, and we are stuck with 2 thunders

No. I didn't leave it out. The thread subject is not about changing or adding to the roster. It is about changing or adding to the playbook. If you were gonna suggest drafting Spiller with our #12 pick, I say hellz to the no. Luxury pick we don't need.

I say we use sheets in the screens

Sounds good to me, though I don't know much about him. He did look fast when he got in games, but he had few opportunities. I just hope we don't use a high round pick on a RB, when that is one of the positions on our offense that is a strength right now. I say we give Ronnie a 3 year contract extension, then draft his replacement next year, weaning the rookie into more and more time over his first 3 seasons.
