As we all know rating a draft is more about opinion, and less about the true reality of what team may or may not have done well in the draft, but at least for the Miami Dolphins draft, you have to feel pretty good knowing Miami may have at the very least gotten a few players that will contribute this year, and far more next year.

*Miami got themselves three players that will be expected to start, or at the very least, compete for a starting job:

Leremy Tunsil is obviously going to be expected to start either at tackle or guard, he is to great a talent not to succeed, and unless any off the field problems arise, he will be on the line when the season starts.Considering Tunsil is by far the best pass blocker in this draft, it will finally give Miami an O-line that can protect T-hill, and because of that, Miami will be MUCH better through the air this year.

Xavien Howard is a big physical corner that matches exactly the type of player Miami wants in their new scheme. The knock on him is that he can look like a premium corner one moment, and then the next moment find himself getting beat. Considering or DC was a secondary guru, Howard will be coached up, allowing his physical traits to take over, and help him this year to succeed.

Leonte Carroo seems like an overkill pick at a position that Miami seems to already be more then fine at, but if you consider Kenny Stills will either have a great season this year, and expect to be paid premium money, or under perform and fail to be re-signed or slide on the roster. Either way Corroo gets a chance to start at the latest next year, and I have a feeling he will get a chance this year to take the starting job from Stills.

*Then you have two more players drafted that might be huge contributors on special teams, as well as help on the offense quite a bit:

Kenyan Drake might not be the starting RB this year (Should be Ajayi to lose), but he will be a great change of pace RB, who is a very good receiver, but on special teams will be where he will do the most damage…whether it be in coverage or returning punts/KO, he might do more then enough to be a good contributor to the team as rookie.

Jakeem Grant just like Drake will get his chances on the offense with his insane speed, and huge confidence and a chip on his shoulders the size of a 50 year old tree, but also like Drake, it will be his chance on special teams where he will get to shine.

As for the rest, Duarte and Lucas will get a chance to make the roster, or maybe end up on the practice squad to eventually mold into quality players. Doughty though he was pretty darn accurate and had a some success in collage, it will be very tough for him to stick…we will see how this all turns out, but I like this draft, what are your expectations on these guys?

Tunsil - start and play well.
Howard - start, mostly because of the competition. Because of the nuances of CB, I expect noticeable improvement games 8>16.
Carroo - don't think he'll start, but I expect him to get playing time.
Drake/Grant - one or both will be PR/KR. I expect another big RB for Gase's rotation scheme, but Drake should get snaps.
The others? IF they make the team, and IF they get to dress for games, ST.
Doughty - Not certain he'll make it to September. If he does, PS. Depends solely on Moore and Thomas and how much Gase values veterans.

My somewhat optimistic take:

Laremy Tunsil - starter day 1.

Xavien Howard - starter day 1.

Kenyan Drake - change of pace RB 10-12 touches per game. His speed will make it hard to keep him off the field. Could move Damien Williams out of consideration.

Leonte Carroo - challenges for WR#3. I don't see how we keep this kid off the field for very long.

Jakeem Grant - immediate teams impact player -- great situational applications. Adds a home run threat whenever he's on the field.

Jordan Lucas - makes the roster - teams contribution and CB depth.

Thomas Duarte - can he add some bulk fast enough? 50/50 on PS.

Brandon Doughty - PS unless he surprises.

I see 5 significant contributors right out of the blocks -- all with significant upside.

Duarte will have to beat out competition and demonstrate capacity to add weight to stick on roster as TE. His receiving chops are excellent so he has a legit chance. Otherwise he's on PS.

Brandon Doughty will be competing against Logan Thomas. Will Matt Moore hang on?

We agree.

I always liked Matthews.

Did douche bag Philbin ****** that kids game or what?!

I think Carroo is more dynamic than Rishard. We'll have to see if he can provide the productive "physical" midrange game that Thill got from Matthews.

When you watch the video on Carroo he seems to combine strong physicality with surprising long speed and overall quicks. He attacks the ball in the air and looks very QB friendly.

It certainly will be very interesting to see how Gase utilizes the new talent and what the new O will looks like. I'm under the impression it's going to be radically different than last year.

Could be exciting. So stay tuned.

BNF.

Didn't they time Matthews with a sun dial? Anyway, my point was we also got 2 starters from the trade down from 8 to 13, so the has to be factored in, doesn't it?

As far as I'm concerned, those two players also do have to be factored, especially when you consider both should be starters this year. I just wanted to concentrate on the draft itself, but those two are part of the draft rewards.

Tunsil will start
Howard will start
Drake will see a lot of snaps
Grant will be starting punt and kickoff returner and will be used to exploit matchups
The rest will be on the practice squad.

No way Carroo last on practice squad. Someone would snatch him up quick. I'm guessing you just forgot to list him.

Kenyan Drake = Joseph Addai (former Colt)
Deonate Carroo = Michael Crabtree lite
Jakeen Grant = Mini Tavon Austin
Thomas Duarte = Jordan Reed
Tunsil = Elite pass blocking tackle

I'm not asking for much.

my expectation is that we have to have 3-4 starters/impact players and 1-2 special teams. Miami has laid this path, where they went big on contracts and failed last year. It caused them not to re-sign their own players and not to sign more free agents for the holes they had. I expect that between this coaching staff and FO, they selected what I just stated. If that doesn't happen, then we have to be convinced no one knows what they're doing and everyone should be fired. Drake should indeed push Ajayi. Gase is an innovative coach and should be able to create competition and opportunities to do so. They traded Jamar Taylor, and that leaves Howard with a chance too. It is obvious they want to go young and not spend money on high-prized FA's (also they are forced to because of the cap). And because they did this, my expectation (to answer the original post) is that they are drafting players to start based on skills and schemes.

I will continue to say this, that the offense (qb and wr) are the strengths of this team. They are the ones that need to step up (and with the addition of Tunsil) to help make up for holes on this team on defense. The deficiencies on this team won't matter if we can get elite play from the qb. And at this point, in year 5, with all the head coaches, GM's and coordinators fired, that should be expected. The excuses are getting thin in inventory. We should be able to lean on RT like we did for Marino, and ask him to carry the load on a team with a bad defense.

I think you're a little over the top in having Tannehill play up to Marino. There are only 2-3 QBs at any one time who can carry a team and, even them, with no MAJOR weaknesses.
As for starters, I still say Tunsil/Howard. Carroo/Grant/Drake get snaps, with Drake getting more if no other RB is signed. Getting 1-2 more for ST and, by NFL standards, that's a pretty good draft.

I would love if all those players you listed each reach the type of player you have next to them...it would be an amazing draft.

I disagree with you. We have to have elite play from Tannehill, like the first year Peyton was in Denver. Then if we don't or it can't happen, then everything has gone to waste, from signing Suh, to signing Gase (to turn him around), to the entire architecture of this team. Is it possible? More likely no. But Miami has a short window before they crumble this thing down, and it rests on RT. This seems to be the biggest debate on the board. We have to expect and be all in with RT, if not where does this franchise go? We need to depend on a player now with 64 starts and enough experience to take a Gase-offense and run with it. He does have WR's right? They let Matthews go because of depth and selected Carroo.

For years Miami has been a mediocre to below-mediocre team. They have lacked a superstar, someone to take over games, esp at RB or QB, the two positions that can turn-around an offense immediately. Imagine all the free agents, drafts and trades. Not one superstar to take them over the hump, at least for a season? So no one thinks RT can be Rodgers, Manning or Brady? Then we will be the same old Phins for the next decade. The quickest way to be elite is through the qb position - you can have major weaknesses and be an elite team. Do the Pats, the model franchise have elite defenses, run games and OLines every year? As stupid as it seems, the Eagles actually get this. They have three qb's and will continue to try (albeit without picks) to figure out which one will take them to elite status.
