I've seen a lot of confusion over this, with most people seeming to think the guy has been cut and is no longer with the team.

This is not so, and in fact this was something that the team planned even when claiming him. Here's an explanation from my site:

Those hoping to see newly-claimed rookie tight end Davon Drew make an impact in 2009 will be disappointed, as the Dolphins have opted to waive Drew with the designation of injured.

If he clears waivers (and he should, since Miami was the only team that put in a claim for him originally), Drew will revert to the Dolphins' season-ending injured reserve list.

So what's going on here? Did Drew show up with an unknown injury, and was that injury significant enough to prevent him from playing all of the 2009 season? The likely answers are no and no.

The Dolphins simply had one too many tight ends on the active roster, and weren't going to go into the regular season that way. So, what they likely did was make up a minor injury for Drew (after all, football players always have an ache somewhere) and waived/injured him.

Now, they can stash him on injured reserve for 2009, clearing up a roster spot for a season he was unlikely to play much anyway, while allowing him compete for a job in 2010. Sneaky, yes, but effective so long as he clears waivers as expected.

Any word on when we'll know he's cleared waivers?

It has to have already happened already, so I imagine if he had we would have heard about the other team claiming him. We were reportedly the only team that put in a clam for him when Baltimore waved him, so I imagine he cleared and is now on IR.

hmmm...fasano getting to walk after this season?? we have 5 TEs somewhere on the team now. either that or they are not completly sold on haynos and nalbone and want an open competition for the 2 back up spots next year

I think that it means more along the lines of produce, or we'll let you walk if some of these guys can produce.

That said, I still think we'll see Fasano, Haynos/Drew, and Nalbone as our 3 TE's in 2010.

It doesn't necessarily means Fasano will walk, unless they're jut blown away by one of the young guys. We'll take four or five into camp, so this way we have a handful of young guys to choose from.

Thanks for the info.

No way we let Fasano walk. Our other TE's are unproven at best (I happen to like their talent, many aren't with me).

As they pick up players they believe they can/will develop (and that they had interest in drafting anyway) it's like getting a draft pick super cheap so the risk is very low. And if they pan out it's fewer positions you have to address on draft day.

When talking about TE's it's a position that clearly needed addressing with the #1 and #2 guys being FA's next year.

Looks to me like the front office is thinking years down the road instead of just about this year....as they should be.
