Not sure if this should go into the draft forum or here...but if we keep going how we are, we probably wont be picking up CJ or JoeThomas in the draft...and we NEED an outside linebacker because Spragan just isnt doing it...nor is Newman, Pope or anyone...Crowder and Thomas are good though. The best outside linebacker (in NCAA) in the country according to most websites ive read is Paul Poluszny from Penn State. Seeing as how we may have taken care of our SS problem, we could probably draft him in the 1st round....OR, would u rather spend big bucks to bring in Lance Briggs, Adalius Thomas, Cato June, or someone else...all of those guys are pretty young...so would u rather sign an FA, or draft someone like Poluszny in the 1st round? Poluszny is 6'2, around 238 pounds...if he added more weight, he'd a Saban type guy.

Not sure how it will pan out, but I think we should definately go with the draft.. The free agents are usually either too expensive, don't want to come here, or are someone else's refuse.. We need to start picking our guys and developing them now while we still have the benefit of Zach and JT still here.. Just my opinion..

If Miami continues with a decent winning streak and ends up around 10-13 in the draft, Patrick Willis from Ole Miss comes to mind. He's head and shoulders above the LB class coming out in 2007.

patrick willis is a beast, i saw the hit he made against the LSU runningback. but most mock draft sites dont even have him going in the 1st round...i mean if we can find a way to trade up and get an early 2nd rounder, and get him too...we'd be set at LB. Zach Thomas is good, but hes nearing the end of his career within 4-5 years...maybe earlier, so it may be time to start grooming someone behind him.

Any remarks on Buster Davis? This guy is a blazing fast dude and can go from sideline to sideline in a blink of an eye. Bowden has played him in numerous roles (and noted that he is versatile at any LB position) and he is a natural born leader; he's helped raise the young guns that FSU now has starting for at the linebacker spots.

I wonder how high he'll go...

mock drafts dont even have him going in the 1st...i really like our chances of picking 2 top linebackers (ILB, OLB) in this years' draft. if Willis and Davis dont go in the 1st, theyll be a steal for anyone.

I'm a homer when it comes to Willis, but his talent is undeniable. From what I've gathered, his stock hasn't changed, and is still mocked to be in the middle-to-late 1st round (I've only been able to see two). Of course, once the combines come around, we all know how that can affect a player's stock. He IS the best LB in the country, IMO, and from others whose opinions hold water. From my last look, he is currently leading the SEC in tackles with about 11+/game. He's very active in the community here in Oxford, and seems to have a good head on his shoulders. Here is a little about him:

Considered one of the nation's top defensive players ... Did not participate in spring drills due to having foot surgery ... A linebacker who can do it all ... Has great speed and quickness and is a tremendous hitter ... A leader both on the field and off the field ... Heavily involved in community service ... Received the 2006 Chucky Mullins Courage Award ... Named preseason first team All-American and No. 1 inside linebacker in the nation by The Sporting News, Lindy's and CollegeFootballNews.com

Problem with Willis is he's an ILB in the pros...or at least thats what scouts have him as.

I think if you want to finally fill the SLB position the right way, you do it with Adalius Thomas. He will not come cheap but I think he's worth it.

Isn't he around 30 years old though? Why not draft a young gun and let him develop like Crowder?

i dont know about Adalius...he IS older...around 29-30...Cato June and Lance Briggs are in their 4th year...about 26 years old. yea Lance is expensive, but he's well worth the money if Saban would rather get an FA.

You've got to realize that there are very specific roles for each of the linebacker positions. The Dolphins have emphasis on the ability to switch between a 4-3 and 3-4 with the same players on the field.

Most of the time, the strongside OLB is lined up on line of scrimmage over the Tight End. A player needs to be big and strong enough, and have long enough arms to engage in dirty work with TEs/Tackles on most downs. That is generally 6'3" 235 pounds+.
Guys who play sideline to sideline like Cato June and Lance Briggs are wasted at the position, because they've got to be strong at the point of attack, and they arent really.

Might as well get a FA, it's a pretty good year to get a LB. We can still draft a LB in the 3rd round. We've done well enough in the middle rounds drafting LB's anyways (see ZT, Crowder, Pope).
