Good article. Well written, informative, and fun! Well done Armando!
The approach is solid. Those are all sound reasons for making those decisions. I'm less excited than Fake GM Mando is about some of those prospects, but that's a solid list without using a draft pick. A Wheaton would be a good solution, and the Wilson and Britt ideas are also worth considering. If we are going with pure speed, I might see what Jakeem Grant can do in the offense before I splash for someone like Goodwin, but hey, he makes good points.
Wide Receiver is one of those key positions that does not have a shortage of players like LT. The size dimensions of LT's mean there are always going to be a shortage. But, with WR's, they're everywhere. They don't all pan out, but we don't need to spend a 1st rounder to get a good prospect. Will we duplicate Stills' production in 2017? Most likely not. But if we need to fill holes, we can find a solution to that position.
I like Stills and wanted to retain him, but the fact of the matter is that he seems to be worth an amount that would be absurd for us to pay. And, he plays a very replaceable position. There are more and more talented WR's coming out of college each year ... that position is slowly going the way of the RB in that it's becoming devalued--but for a different reason. RB's became devalued because of the emphasis on the passing game. WR's are becoming devalued because of the sheer volume of talented and NFL-ready guys coming out of college these days, and that number keeps increasing. As the NFL's appetite for WR's increases from 2 to 3 to 4, the number of good prospects has more than doubled. And, they are entering the NFL much more ready to contribute on day 1 than ever before. The good prospects are no longer a rare commodity. They've become more like CB's, where you can probably never have 'enough' but finding a solid one isn't really that hard. At least, not $12M per season difficult.
