Miami — Three Performances of Note

Checking In With the Rookies
Let’s face it, for many people preseason is the first real chance to see their rookies in action and may be the only reason to tune in to a game before the real action starts. Right tackle Ja’Wuan James played 31 snaps (compared to the rest of the starters who began to fade out of the lineup after 10) and had a mixed day. He was actually perfect in pass protection, keeping a clean sheet from 16 pass-blocking snaps, though a cynic might point to the opposition as a big factor in that. His run blocking grade of -1.8 wasn’t great and left him with an overall mark of -0.7.
Second-rounder Jarvis Landry was only targeted twice, catching one pass – a quick screen – and getting dropped immediately for a loss, but did look dangerous as a return man.
Second Team D Upstages the 1′s
It wasn’t a great day for the Miami starters on defense with only really Randy Starks (typically) showing well and even he could only flash rather than dominate in his limited snaps. By contrast, the second team had several very positive performances with Jason Trusnik (+2.4), Jordan Tripp (+2.4), Will Davis (+3.1) and Terrence Fede (+4.1), in particular, impressing. Fede, a seventh-round rookie, graded well against both the run and the pass and though he couldn’t get the quarterback to the ground, he notched four hurries, more than anybody else on the team. The performance of these guys with the second unit was a large reason the Falcons could only manage 2.6 yards per carry on offense and suffered several plays that were blown up for big losses.

This is the type guy you just want to succeed, coming from a small school, he is the first to get to the NFL.



Five minutes and forty seconds into the second quarter of Friday night's preseason game between the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons, Terrence Fede made Marist College history.
Bringing down running back Devonta Freeman after a nine-yard run, Fede became the first Red Fox football product to record a tackle in an NFL game, though his Dolphins lost a 16-10 decision to the host Falcons to begin the preseason.
Before Friday, no Marist football player had ever played in an NFL game. Fede was made the first NFL draft pick in school history when the Dolphins selected him in the seventh round this year.
The 22-year-old defensive end picked up another tackle late in the fourth quarter to help get the Dolphins back the ball, trailing by six with 1:59 to play, but the team turned the ball over on downs to effectively end the game.

Nice to hear they played as good as I had hoped. Wow will davis played alot better then I thought
 
Would be insanity if we end up getting more production out of an unheard of 7th round pick than the guy we used our top 2 picks on last year.

Fede was dynamic at the beginning and middle of the game. At the end he tailed off, but thats expected for a rookie.

Him, McCain, and Tripp were impressive.

When a corner is near the ball its because the QB threw that way. I'm not sure why the QB was picking on him but he was

That and he didn't get burned.

Last year, double-moves were his kryptonite. Glad to see him doing well.

ATLANTA —

The Dolphins gambled by loading up on small school players in this year’s NFL draft.

It just might pay off.

Defensive end Terrence Fede, a seventh-round pick out of Marist College, had two tackles — including one for a loss — in Miami’s 16-10 preseason loss to Atlanta on Friday.

Fede was tied for the team lead with 50 snaps — 41 on defense and nine on special teams — and he was graded by Pro Football Focus as the Dolphins’ top player in the game.

Linebacker Jordan Tripp, drafted in the fifth round out of Montana, had three tackles and a defended pass and was graded as the team’s fourth-best player.

Chris McCain, a rookie linebacker out of Cal, didn’t come from a small school, but could be a hidden gem. McCain has obvious talent but was dismissed from his college team for off-the-field issues.

He graded as Miami’s seventh-best player on Friday.

Although many of their snaps came against Atlanta’s second- and third-team defenses, the play of the rookie linebackers is especially encouraging after Miami’s first-team defense fell flat.
