Here at Finheaven Draft Countdown, we hope to create the most accurate mock draft for the upcoming 2008 GM League Draft. Put together by the renowned Scott "Right" Hand... or at least he has young workers put this together while he gets the credit. Nonetheless, the Finheaven Draft Countdown crew has examined each team's need and has put together a possible outcome for Saturday's draft. Enjoy.
1. New England Patriots – Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
Although most believe the McFadden rumors to be merely a smokescreen, when looking at their roster, you have to admit they don't have very many holes. With Green and Warren manning the defensive end spots, they don't have a direct need there. Chris Long doesn't seem to fit in the 3-4 as a defensive end and Glenn Dorsey would be a bad selection as he would be more suited for the 4-3. They have no need for offensive linemen as their five starters will be returning. The Patriots GM will likely pick the best player available in McFadden.
2. Cleveland Browns – Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College
At one point in time, it could have been said that Cleveland was crazily trading up in the draft in order to select Darren McFadden. With Michael Turner signing with the Browns, it fills a hole at running back. With a major hole at the quarterback position with Sage Rosenfels as the starter, the Browns GM will select Matt Ryan. Ryan is a prototypical quarterback who stands at 6'5†and nearly 230 lb. With the additions of Michael Turner, Bryant Johnson, DJ Hackett, and Vernon Davis to Cleveland's offense, they will need a quarterback to give these players the ball. Ryan is that man that will be the face of the Cleveland franchise for the next ten years.
3. St Louis Rams – Chris Long, DE, Virginia
When looking at St Louis' roster, I was pleasantly surprised with the work they did via trades and free agency to improve their team. With an improved offensive line and overall offense, this rules out Jake Long as their situation. The Rams need another defensive end in their line up with Leonard Little at left end and Paul Spicer at right end. Chris Long would be just the replacement to slip him in for Spicer as the team's right defensive end. Long, son of Hall of Fame defensive end Howie Long, would immediately start and bring youth and leadership to an aging Rams defense. Glenn Dorsey could be a selection too, but I would imagine Long would be the best option at this point.
4. Minnesota Vikings – Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
The Minnesota Vikings are in dire need at the defensive tackle position after trading away Pat Williams, leaving them with only Kevin Williams and Fred Evans. The Vikings run a 4-3 and Glenn Dorsey would fit perfectly in Minnesota. Dorsey would start as the team's second defensive tackle and will not be pressured to carry the load as the team has a relatively strong four with Kevin Williams. The Vikings GM has many selections in the first three rounds and will likely reshape the team with these picks. If Darren McFadden drops to the forth overall selection, I could see him in purple as well.
5. Kansas City Chiefs – Jake Long, OT, Michigan
With the two starters are tackle in Kansas City, they will definitely need to draft one this year in the draft. Damion McIntosh is listed as the team's right tackle, although playing left tackle last year in Kansas City. Listed at the left tackle position is Wayne Gandy, a 37 year old journeyman tackle who can't be depended on as an every down starter in the league. Jake Long will likely replace Gandy in the left tackle position or will move McIntosh to left tackle and reside in the right tackle position. After Kansas City's poor showing last year in the running game, they will look to improve their offensive line to help All Pro Larry Johnson return to his form.
6. Cleveland Browns – Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio State
The Browns need dire help at the defensive end/outside linebacker hybrid as it appears they will be running a defense related to that style. With David McMillan listed as the team's right outside linebacker in the 3-4 and the team's right defensive end in the 4-3, it's safe to assume that he is not the permanent solution. Gholston will be brought in to replace McMillan and be Cleveland's version of Shaun Merriman or DeMarcus Ware. He'll be a pass rushing outside linebacker in the 3-4 and a defensive end in the 4-3.
7. Miami Dolphins – Keith Rivers, LB, USC
The Dolphins have a huge hole in the linebacker position with Matt Roth and Dontarious Thomas manning the inside linebacker positions. Rivers would replace Matt Roth as the team's inside linebacker. Some may wonder why Rivers would be an inside linebacker, but in the 3-4, he's a prototypical inside linebacker. Rivers would help strengthen the Dolphins front seven with his athleticism and quickness. Rivers can lay the wood and is good in coverage too. Rivers would be an excellent addition to the Dolphins, it's too bad that #55 is already taken by Joey Porter though.
8. Atlanta Falcons – Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC
The Falcons have holes at running back and defensive tackle mainly and with Ellis on the board, they won't be able to resist bringing him in. Ellis will go into Atlanta as their starting defensive tackle next to Jonathan Babineaux . Rashard Mendenhall is another possibility, but Atlanta will likely take a running back with one of their later selections due to Ellis being on the board. Ellis is a powerful defensive tackle with a non-stop motor who will fit perfectly in the Falcon's 4-3 scheme. He is exactly what Atlanta needs as a defensive leader.
9. Green Bay Packers – Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville
After Favre's unexpected retirement, it leaves Green Bay in a major hole after trading away Aaron Rodgers for DeAngelo Hall. The Packers have other needs as well, but nothing compared to the quarterback position. Brohm is a vocal leader who will command respect in the huddle. Brohm is pretty solid with his mechanics and is a fairly smart quarterback. Brohm will come into Green Bay as the designated starter and will be the new face of the franchise for years to come.
10. New Orleans Saints – Domnique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tennessee State
The Saints are relatively sound at every position, but need depth. With Brian Williams and Mike McKenzie manning the starting cornerback position in New Orleans, Rodgers-Cromartie is the best option in that aspect. Rodgers-Cromartie could be McKenzie's eventually replacement while being given time to grow into that spot with McKenzie and Williams starting at each cornerback position. Rogers-Cromartie, cousin of Pro Bowler Antonio Cromartie, has a ton of upside and all the physical tools needed to be a top cornerback.
11. Houston Texans – Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois
The Texans have a huge hole at the running back position with Chris Brown looking to be their starting running back. After trading for quarterback Kevin Kolb, they look to have put the future in his hands in that approach. With the Texans looking to have a new young offense, Mendenhall will likely take over the starting half back spot. Mendenhall has a unique blend of speed and power that combines to a style similar to Miami Dolphins running back, Ronnie Brown. Mendenhall is able to block and catch out of the backfield and would be a great fit in Houston's offense.
12. Denver Broncos – Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State
After the retirement of left tackle Matt Lepsis, it leaves Denver in a pickle as far as the left tackle position goes. With Denver's offense based off of the power running game, a left tackle is necessary for their success in the run game. Ryan Clady is known as the best pure left tackle in this year's draft and Denver would happily take him. Clady has excellent size (6'6â€, 310 lb) and is known for his athleticism and nasty demeanor. Clady is a hard working kid who will fit very well in Denver's system.
13. Carolina Panthers – Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy
Carolina's starting cornerbacks are Samari Rolle and the returning Williams James. Rolle is a good cornerback, while James is a major risk and cannot be depended on as a full-time starter due to health reasons. MeKelvin can step in and be a major player, leaving James as the team's nickel back. McKelvin is a huge playmaker with great speed and athleticism. He can be one of the top cornerbacks in the league with his talent as he can tackle, catch, and cover; which is rare combination for cornerbacks because normally they only have one to two of the three.
14. Seattle Seahawks – Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon
The Seahawks are in dire need of a starting running back and the search ends here. The top tier running back in McFadden is long gone, but one of the two second tier backs in Stewart remains and Seattle will snatch him and not look back. Stewart stands at 5'10â€, 235 lb yet ran a 4.48 in the NFL Combine. He's a strong, yet quick back who looks to make the most out of everything. He's fairly fresh after carrying the load for only one year while sharing the load for another year and is also a return man as he lead the nation with a 33.7 yard kickoff return average.
15. New York Giants – Mike Jenkins, CB, USF
The Giants traded away Plaxico Burress for the 15th overall selection and were likely looking to add a cornerback to their relatively weak tandem of Aaron Ross and Randal Gay. We know that they were praying for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to fall to them, but unfortunately that didn't work out for them. They will settle for the experienced Mike Jenkins out of the University of South Florida. Jenkins is a physical corner who has all the tools to be a top tier cornerback in this league. Jenkins will look to compete with Gay as the team's starting cornerback. A possible cornerback duo of Ross and Jenkins will leave the Giants with talented youth for years to to come.
16. Arizona Cardinals – DeSean Jackson, WR, California
After trading away Larry Fitzgerald to the Miami Dolphins and losing Bryant Johnson via free agency, the Cardinals need a receiver to compliment the likes of Anquan Boldin. DeSean Jackson will compliment Boldin as the number two receiver to keep him from getting double teamed constantly. Jackson is an extremely fast and quick wide receiver who is a nightmare in open field. With the duo of Jackson and Boldin, teams will have to do their best to keep Boldin quiet while ensuring Jackson won't burn the opposition. Jackson is also a spectacular returnman who will help the Cardinals in that aspect of the game, as well.
17. Cleveland Browns – Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas
With the Browns going into the season with Ken Lucas and Kenny Wright listed as their starting cornerbacks, a major fix needs to made as soon as possible. With Talib in the mix, it'll leave the Browns with a solid secondary with the addition of Sam Madison as the likely nickel cornerback. Talib is a relatively smooth athlete with amazing leaping ability and great hands. Talib is simply a playmaker who anticipates the ball well.
18. Houston Texans – Kenny Phillips, S, Miami
The Texans safeties are solid, but by no means spectacular. With Chris Crocker likely lining up as the team's free safety, Houston will need a strong safety who will be able to deteriorate his opponents. Phillips is a hard hitting safety who is great in run support. Phillips is a vocal leader who looks to follow in the footsteps of Ed Reed and the late Sean Taylor. With Phillips ability to cover in both man and zone, he'll be able to play in Cover 2 if the Texans wish play that scheme. He'll be an excellent addition to Houston's young defense as the Texans look to bolster their secondary with playmakers.
19. Philadelphia Eagles – Phillip Merling, DE, Clemson
Darren Howard has never been able to prove why he belongs in Philadelphia with his bloated contract and the end is near for this former second round pick. Merling has been expected to go higher than in the middle of the first round, but due to team needs, teams passed on the Gaines Adam's running mate. Merling has excellent size with non-stop motor to boot. He is very strong with great quickness while using these to play in a very nasty demeanor. Merling is an extremely versatile player who can play in a variety of defenses which will make Jim Johnson and his blitz heavy defense fall in love with this kid.
20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Limas Sweed, WR, Texas
The Buccaneers have not gotten any younger at the wide receiver position after adding Darrell Jackson, although Drew Carter was a great addition at a very cheap price. Limas Sweed will bring the youth to the Buccaneers offense as they added some new guys to possibly lead this team to a Super Bowl. Sweed would be a huge target red zone target as he stands 6''4†and 215 lb as well as running a relatively fast 4.52 40 time for his size. Sweed has excellent leaping abilities and has very soft hands. Sweed will be the Buccaneers go-to-guy for the next ten years as well as give Joey Galloway help with the secondary.
21. Washington Redskins – Kentwan Balmer, DT, North Carolina
After releasing defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin, the Redskins need a replacement defensive tackle. Adding William Joseph and Shaun Cody will not be enough to bolster the front four as they bring in Kentwan Balmer to play next to Anthony Montgomery as one of the team's defensive tackles. Balmer has great size with plenty of room to grow, standing at 6'4†and 310lb. Balmer is extremely strong with relatively good speed and quickness. Balmer has an unlimited amount of potential and the Redskins hope to max that out as much as possible.
22. Dallas Cowboys – Branden Albert, OG, Virgina
After trading Kyle Kosier to the Tennessee Titans, the Cowboys are in dire need of a left guard. Branden Albert is the top offensive guard in this year's draft class and could start immediately to bolster the left side of the line. Albert stands at 6'6†and 310lb, while his size shouldn't be judged as slow as Albert happens to have very quick feet. A strong and powerful guard with a nasty demeanor who has plenty of upside, Albert will look to become the best guard the Cowboys have seen since Larry Allen.
23. Miami Dolphins – Dan Connor, LB, Penn State
The Miami Dolphins are still a work in process for their defense and adding Dan Connor will only help bolster their plans to infuse youth into their defense. Connor will likely compliment Keith Rivers in the Miami Dolphins defense as the team's other inside linebacker, moving Matt Roth into the back up role. Connor is a physical linebacker who plays with a nasty demeanor and will deliver the big hit without question. Connor's intelligence is something to be coveted as he'll become Miami's next Zach Thomas as far as knowledge of the game goes. With Dan Connor rooming the field, expect Miami's defense to improve without question.
24. Tennessee Titans – Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma
The Titans have brought back Derrick Mason, but his age has slowed him down and may not be able to take the full load as a number one receiver. Malcolm Kelly will be able to to come in at the very least a number two wide receiver, eventually taking over for Mason. Kelly, a 6'4†225lb junior from Oklahoma, will be a huge red zone target for the Titans and Vince Young. The Titans need to add more weapons to help Vince Young become a top tier quarterback and Malcolm Kelly will bring together a new connection that should last for years.
25. Chicago Bears – Jeff Otah, OT, Pittsburgh
After losing John Tait to free agency, one would say that God answered the Bears GM's prayers in the form of a Pittsburgh tackle by the name of Jeff Otah. Otah will replace John Tait as the team's left tackle. Otah has a huge frame of 6'6†and 320lb, while having great quickness and light feet. Otah is a very physical player who uses his strength to his advantage. Otah possibly has the most upside in this year's draft out of all the offensive linemen and the Bears will hope to use this to their advantage.
26. Atlanta Falcons – Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas
The Falcons current starting running back in Warrick Dunn, while Dunn is a solid running back, he cannot carry the entire load. The Falcons bring in the likes of Felix Jones is who a shifty running back who can make the catch out of the backfield. Jones will hope to become the next starting running back for the Atlanta Falcons and will likely split time with Dunn his first year. Jones has been fresh during college due to splitting time with the likes of Darren McFadden and also can be a top kick returning option for Atlanta.
27. San Diego Chargers – Reggie Smith, S, Oklahoma
San Diego has very few holes, with depth the only issue. With an aging Marlon McCree on the team, San Diego will draft his eventual replacement in Reggie Smith. Smith is more of a cornerback/safety 'tweener who could play any position so he could also replace Drayton Florence as the team's nickelback with Cromartie and Jammar manning the starting cornerback positions. Smith is a physical player who can make plays happen at any given moment. Whatever path Smith takes in San Diego, expect him to succeed.
28. Dallas Cowboys – Mario Manningham, WR, Michigan
The Cowboys need to infuse their wide receiver corp with youth as their starters stand as Terrell Owens and Marvin Harrison. Although the Cowboys look to have a top tier wide receiver combination, Harrison is getting up there in age, as in Owens and they'll need to bring in an eventual replacement. Mario Manningham has excellent speed with great agility although having a poor showing at the NFL Combine. He has exceptional hands and is a true deep threat as he is very deadly in the open field. Manningham will likely play as the team's slot receiver until Harrison retires, taking over for the future hall of famer.
29. Seattle Seahawks – Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida
After losing Patrick Kerney through a trade, the Seahawks will find his replacement as a gift from the football gods. Harvey has dropped far and beyond due to teams addressing their needs and not being suited for a 3-4 defense. Harvey will reside at the left end position next to Daryl Tapp, as the Seahawks will have one of the youngest front fours in the league. Harvey is an extremely athletic player with an unstoppable motor. His frame, 6'4†270lb, is prototypical for a 4-3 defensive end. He has great instincts and plays with a nasty demeanor. After a few years, the Seahawks won't even remember who Patrick Kerney was with Harvey's productiveness... and that's saying something.
30. Minnesota Vikings – Calais Campbell, DE, Miami
The Vikings are in need of a few other positions, but at this position, Campbell is the best available player to their needs that fit the 4-3 scheme. Campbell is a tower, standing at 6'7†and weighing in at 290 lb. Campbell will look to man one of the defensive end positions next to Ray Edwards, while Kenechi Udeze battles leukemia and Erasmus James battles his second ACL injury. Campbell is a strong athlete with a great motor. He has very long arms that will disrupt the passing lanes, making him a nightmare for any gunslinging quarterback. Campbell will look to be a Vikings first round defensive end who doesn't disappoint.
31. New England Patriots (Forfeited)
Selection forfeited due to punishment of league rules (via NFL).
32. New York Giants – James Hardy, WR, Indiana
Some may wonder why the Giants didn't select one of the top tier wide receivers with their first round pick, but while hoping for Rodgers-Cromartie, it didn't work out as they were hoping. The Giants select Plaxico Burress' replacement in James Hardy. Hardy, the 6'5†220lb wide receiver out of Indiana will be a huge red zone target for Eli Manning. Hardy will likely lead a young group of receivers in David Tyree, Steve Smith, among others. Hardy will be the team's number one receiver and will look to put up big numbers with his outstanding leaping ability and excellent ball skills. Hardy has pretty good speed for his size and will look to help bring New York back to the promised land.
GM League First Round Mock Draft
1. New England Patriots – Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
Although most believe the McFadden rumors to be merely a smokescreen, when looking at their roster, you have to admit they don't have very many holes.
