Problem is much like a golfer punters can be plagued with a series of shanks, and Fields admits that's the source of his problem this season.
"I need to do better. I haven't hit the ball well. This is something I need to work on," said Fields, who produced a disappointing 40-yard punt that featured a 17-yard return for Green Bay, which set up the final game-winning drive in the final two minutes of last Sunday's 27-24 loss.
Fields is averaging 43.9 yards on his 19 punts. His net average is 31.3 yards per punt, which is the worst in the NFL by far. He's 3.6 yards behind the next to last punter, which is Chicago's Pat O'Donnell.
Last season, Fields averaged 48.8 yards per punt, and had a net average of 42.4 yards, which was a career high. He's averaged better than 40 net yards per punt for the previous three seasons.
"In practice and warm ups I'm hitting the ball very well, but I haven't been doing it in the games. That's something I need to change," Fields said. "I just need to do it. Simple as that, hit the ball better in the game."
