The Dolphins have hired Brett Maxie to coach their safeties.
Maxie, 45, was previously defensive backs coach of the Atlanta Falcons since 2004. He was let go when the Falcons fired head coach Jim Mora on Jan. 1.
Maxie's connection to the Dolphins is defensive coordinator Dom Capers, who coached Maxie in New Orleans when Capers was an assistant coach with the Saints. Capers hired Maxie in 1998 to be the Carolina Panthers' defensive backs coach.
Maxie also has coached with the San Francisco 49ers and went to Atlanta when Mora was hired as head coach.
Maxie played in the NFL with New Orleans (1985-93), Atlanta (1994), Carolina (1995-96) and San Francisco (1997).
Meanwhile, the Dolphins have retained longtime secondary coach Mel Phillips to coach cornerbacks. Phillips has been with the team since 1985.

Interesting, I thought we were gonna cut way back on the assistants. But if Capers wanted him, then it's A-OK by me.

It,s all good here...Maxie welcome to Miami....

You have to admire Mel Phillips for hanging on so long.He must be good.

Twenty one years spanning Shula,Johnson,Wanny,Saban and now Cameron.

That kind of longevity is not seen very much in todays game.

I think Mel must be a heck of a coach to hang around through so many coaching changes. But my question is then, why do we need a safeties coach? Mel is the secondary coach, right? And doesn't the secondary include the safeties? Pretty soon we're gonna get down to having a coach for every single position. When is the offensive left guard coach gonna be hired? :D

How long will it be until each player (or at least each starter) gets to have his own coach? Wayne is a generous guy.

It could be that Saban didnt even know he was on the staff .He had so many coaches tripping over themselves that some might have gone un-noticed like the guy who kept getting moved out of offices and whose stapler was ripped off by the higher ups...forget the name of the movie.

Seriously the amount of staff may be an inheritance of the Saban days.

Office Space.

Yeah, I just think this hire is a little too much. I have nothing against the guy. I know nothing about him. But, it just seems overboard to me.

It would seem Mel Phillips is the coach that noone can fire. Every job has them, the guy that's been there so long you just don't have the heart to fire them so you keep them on the staff and hire someone else to do their job for them aka Maxie. I mean our secondary has mostly survived on talent more than teaching throughout the years hasn't it? Look what happened this year with a less talented secondary they showed poor form and just looked horrible overall. I remember constantly screaming for them to play the ball.

No disrespect to Mel, I do not know much about the guy but I am very familiar with the token guys at work that are un fire-able and just noted the similiarities

Mel was considering retirement last offseason, so it appears he has only a few seasons left in him. Kirby Smart, our previous 'safeties coach', was believed to have been brought in to work under Mel and eventually succeed him in a couple of years. Its one of the Sabanisms that I kind of liked, hiring a younger coach to work under one of the best so that when the older guy eventually retires, you have both continuity and a guy ready to take over, having learned from the best. Look no further than Tim Davis working with Hudson Houck for another example.

No one is knocking down the doors to get him so it could be something like that.I cant remember anyone asking for permission to interview him.

He was a great all pro defensive back so I prefer to think that he is good.

That sounds similiar to situations i've run into, he was probably very good in his time and remained so loyal to the team through the years that as time and the game passed him by they just didn't have the heart to let him go, so they bring in Maxie and let Mel retain his position.
