This fifth round pick out of Memphis has been one of the biggest surprises of training camp, flying all over the field and making his presence felt.
“When I was younger I was a leader,” he explained. “But you know being a rookie you have to step into that roll. You have to form into that roll. You have to show the guys that you possess those attributes to do that for the team. It’s whatever it takes. If they want me on special teams, that’s fine. Corner, nickel, wherever they want to put me I’m willing to play the ball
game.”
Before getting to the NFL, McCain idolized a current Dolphins player, Pro Bowler Brent Grimes. Not just for his on-field talents, but for his football IQ.
“I just pick his brain from time to time. Whether we’re watching film, watching game tape, I ask him ‘let’s come over, get a few more minutes of film to show me something he knows that I don’t.’ Like I said he’s a gaeat guy,” said McCain.
That extra time has paid off. McCain passed his first major evaluation, coming down with an interception and multiple pass break-ups during the Dolphins scrimmage at FIU.
