Personally, I understand why. It might make more sense to spend big money on a free agent or two if the team feels like it's only one or two players away, but this FO seems to understand that the key is to build with younger cheaper players to first establish a good core of players on both sides of the ball.
 
i think so-called "shutdown" corners are overrated. truth is, if the quarterback has enough time to throw, any receiver will get open. it is far more important to have good pass rushers.

i mean, the 49ers paid all that money to nate clements and their pass "d" was near the bottom of the league. reason being, they couldn't generate a solid pass rush. the pats have had street free agents and wide receivers line up at corner in recent years and have fared ok because of a solid pass rush.

don't get me wrong, good corners are nice to have, but i'd rather have good pass rushers.

Yea, and it's also very very nice to have BOTH. Many people think we will have a good pass rush this year so good CB's to go along with it would sure be nice. I do happen to think Will Allen is a very good CB but you can never have too much talent.
