I believe Bill Lazor will use the Read option and pre-snap motion on the majority of snaps vs the Pats. I'm thinking over 60% will be option plays.

Here's why: Tannehill has shown signs that he will be good at running this kind of offense and a healthy Moreno should be better than Miller in the option. Good RB play is vital to good option play.

In the first preseason game we saw Tannehill march the ball down the field and score with ease (even with Miller missing holes). Sure it was the first game of preseason but I think this drive was telling of what we have in store for the regular season in terms of Playcalling from Lazor. After breaking down the tape of that first TD drive I found that on 90% of the snaps, the dolphins showed a Zone Read pre-snap look. 60% of the plays were actually inside zone read runs or read option pass Plays with fakes to the RB. During this drive the Dolphins also used pre-snap motion on 80% of the plays. In that first TD drive we lined up in an Offset I formation one time for a 1 yard gain and the rest were all Read Option looks.

Eagles - Read Option Pre-snap look from last season (look familiar?)

All Four big plays on that drive? Read Option? you ask;
Yes!! That Big 36 yard throw to Matthews, Read option play action pass with RB fake, The two big 1st down Runs by Miller, Inside Zone Read option runs and the TD throw to Gibson, Read option pass with a fake to the RB! Good Stuff! I almost wish we did not run that last TD play as it was a thing of beauty.WR bunch to the left, the whole line blocked to the left all the players streaked to the left, Tannehill "hands" to Miller who is streaking to the left (Brilliantly faked) , Nobody bothered to look for the lonely Brandon Gibson who sneaks behind the line in pre-snap motion to the RIGHT, WIDE OPEN, TD! Theft!

It is my opinion (and some other FH posters) that immediately after this drive was completed the Dolphins changed gears for the rest of the preseason and started playing mostly vanilla offense. The reason?? I believe that Philbin and Lazor saw very quickly that Tannehill had the ability to successfully run the Chip Kelly / Lazor hybrid style offense. At this point they switched to a more vanilla look to try and save some tricks for for the opening game vs the Patriots. Ryan Tannehill can be a better QB than Nick Foles for this type of offense. He is faster, better at throwing on the run and more athletic. Those attributes are a huge part of running successful option football. Also Keep in mind Lamar Miller has not shown the ability to be able to follow blockers and stay upright after initial contact. If Moreno gets the majority of carries he should be better than Miller at running the Zone read which really relies on good RB play.

Reading Bootang25's Post the other day about the chip kelly effect that Lazor might have made me start to think about how the Dolphins Offense looked very different in the first drive compared to the rest of Tannehills drives in the preseason. After reading his suggestion to watch the Fish Duck video's I also have a much greater understanding of how option football works. Thanks Man!

Nice post! What concerns me about Tannehill is ball security. If he is smart with the ball and doesn't put himself in a position for a big hit then I think we will be alright. I love that Lazor will be on the sideline. Our offense is still a work in progress and he's gonna be holding Tannehill's hand the whole way. :-)

Thanks for the write up. However, I just can't help and think Billy didn't spend time with Chip for not-thing! Meaning, he's come-up with a few counters for the Read Option.
It's sorta like last season(iirc) when he kept bringing a man of the edge vs Shermans offensive formation. It was a very rough day and a simple way to attack Sherman stagnant cow-crap!

I didn't read any of that crap, but I don't care, it's Dolphin Day so Great Post regardless my friend!!!!!!

Wouldn't mind seeing this play dailed up...

If they want to run the ball this year heavy read option is their best bet...it in a nut shell

But if they want to keep those lbs at depth and honest out of those looks they MUST establish the pass out of the read option looks...otherwise the lbs will just fill and the edge players will stay home

Establish the pass and keep handing it off on the inside zone after you have...

I am really interested to see how well Moreno Does in the Option game today. (and If miller can step up in a real game) The RB play is a huge part of the Read Option being a success or failure. Also a smart RB can "Option out" of following his blockers if large holes open up due to overpursuit from the defense. Miller (so far) has shown an ability not to find those holes very often.. Moreno. well well see!

The counter will be to hit Tannehill even if he has handed the ball off.

Yeah that something you got to worry about for sure...the edge player blowing up your qb...which Is perfectly legal....if they get misdirection involved the wide stretch is a safer route for the qb and allows for some wide open backside looks off of pa

Hard lateral movement from the oline is key to getting lbs to take bait etc...

By the way the last play break down with pics on here is basically a dialed down version of what the seahawks did they other night with the qb keep read option turn and run a few steps and then pass out of it...only difference is Miami tried to use a wr screen...I expect to see similar stuff but more intuitive....they just wanted to see the defense react to that kind of look...you probably scrap the screen cause Miamii's wrs do not block well but you could flex dion sims and let him get out there to pick up a block from a similar play design

Theres just no limit to what an oc can run with this qb...endless possibilities...if Lazors legit he's gonna have heads spinning out of all the different formations he can employ and thats minus all the late motion and shifts...comes down to execution

The offense is gonna take off this year..every week a different package to throw the defenses off on top of bread and butter read option looks...I don't know that it will happen today although it could but this teams gonna score some damn points...belichick with a month to prepare isgonna be a tough nut to crack...but I'd be more concerned about this defense if I was you guys than the o...that lb core is ripe to be exposed and the depth corner play is gonna be heavily tested...saving grace for the d is we got two legit guys on the edge...if we can get in the sub package...i smell a lot of long drives for the opposition...

The tackles being shored up was the key to the offense...and in pass pro I'm a believer we've done just that...

Tannehill seems built for the zone read and its why they went and got Lazor to teach it to him. I'll admit that this scheme has a lot of potential and we have the right personnel for it. However, I remain optimistically skeptical for now. I need to see them execute smartly and keep defenses guessing. This also has the potential for a lot of quick 3 and outs and putting a ton of pressure on our own defense.

I wanted to bump this thread because the OP's very informative post explaining the read option made the game so much more meaningful to me as I watched it. The read option truly is a brilliant base scheme once you understand what we're trying to do. I was able to tell where we wanted the Patriots to think the ball was going before the play started.

I'm no expert, but in my observations of the game it looked like the Patriots had no answer to the inside or outside read option, even though the design of the play is to telegraph where it's going; then, count on the defense's over reaction to that knowledge. It seems that even disciplined defenses have major trouble with it.

The beauty of it is that we always have an extra blocker in the direction of the play because we read away from the opposing defense's best lineman or linebacker; which nullifies his presence without even having to block him. Also, the RB is free, or even encouraged, to cut back if the defense over pursues.

I'm also looking forward to the first few times RT chooses to keep it and run into a wide open second level when the LB takes the fake. I'm not sure if I saw us do any play action off it today or not. I'll have to watch closer next time. It speaks volumes that he didn't have to do that today because we were killing them with the IRO.

This offensive scheme is very encouraging to me. For once, we have coaches and players using reads, motion and mismatches, and not just counting on winning all of the individual contests during each play in order for a play to be successful.
