Day two of training camp was much like day one. The team continued on installations and fundamentals on both sides of the football. It was a good day on the offensive side of the ball for the most part, starting fast with a lot of synergy between the quarterbacks and the wide receiving groups. That doesn’t mean that the defense didn’t have their share of game changing plays however. Both units competed well and it was a highly-contested practice for just the second day of training camp.

Here are some of my observations from Day Two of Dolphins Training Camp:

1. Zone Read Influence

It’s no secret that the Dolphins offensive system will dramatically change this year compared to prior years. One of the main differences is the installment of the zone read. Whether in college football or the NFL, this scheme allows the offense to create hesitation at the edge of the defensive line and at the linebacker position. With the athletic ability of Ryan Tannehill at quarterback, his foot speed and simply reading the edge of the defense causes doubt in the minds of the backside pursuers. This one simple play gives the Dolphins running game a way to attack an overly aggressive front seven and make them play more honest at the point of attack.

Someone we haven't been talking about a lot is Armon binns. I am very excited to see what he can do. He killed it last camp and this camp, and his 6'5" height is desperately needed in the RZ. His injury I think was very substantial. Sometimes I forget how big the loss of him and keller was before the season even started. I'm rooting for binns to make a comeback here!

edit: just looked and he's actually 6'3" but still.

Good point about Binns. He would be a nice complementary player in the unit, bringing height and red zone potential that is lacking in the rest of the corps. I think he has a good shot at the 53.

Not only is he tall, but he's thick as hell for WR, however, he has a battle ahead of him to make the squad IMO.

I'm rooting for him!

There better be a behind closed doors zone read qb step back and fire the football package in the play book...be some easy in front of the safeties and over the getting nosy on the action lbs chunk yardage in cutting route opportunities vs single coverage to exploit

1st play against NE, a bootleg deep cross to Wallace against Revis for 65 yards and a TD..

Anythings possible right? :idk:

I like Binns as well, but making this 53 as a WR this year is not going to be easy. Gotta figure Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Landry are locks (that's 4). Usually you keep 5...maybe 6 for a returner. There's still Rashard Matthews, Binns, Thigpen, Damian Williams. Would be nice if we could swing a trade and deal Matthews but I don't see it happening.

Just because I think he can bring more to the receiving game Id like to see Damian Williams over Thigpen.

"Desperately" needed? Last year the Dolphins rated 11th in the league in Red Zone TD Percentage, barely behind Indy...and Tannehill was 18 / 1 TD ratio in the Red Zone. I think that part's covered.

Still mad at that idiot rookie for that bs hit on Keller.

6'5'' in heels...

Me too . Swearinger. Also mad at the coaching staff for leaving a star in while rookies are trying to make names for themselves on defense with atrocious hits like that, and calling a short flare pass to make Keller turn around in the air against a zone defense where they sit back and tee that one up. Recipe for disaster and a professional coaching staff should be all over that.

Yeah desperately. We did not have anybody last year that could go up and get the ball. Yes we did "ok" without it, but the inability to make plays on the ball in the RZ cost us a lot of TD's. Tannehill can make the throws, but it would be nice if he didn't have to make a perfect throw to the corner or the pylon every time we got into the RZ.

Yeah that hit really was bad. I remember sitting there watching it with my gf, eating some food, and the second he hit the ground I just tossed my plate aside in disgust. I wish Keller was back with us! Looks like he might be done though. Very sad to see someones dream snuffed out by something stupid like that. I don't wish harm on Swearinger, but I really hope he realizes that what he did was very wrong.
