From Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback column on CNN/SI: "Want Jeff Fisher? Call Bud Adams. Offer him two high draft choices, one of them a first-rounder, and he'll start listening."

I've always been a fan of Fisher. If Huizenga is willing to open up the checkbook, I'd love to see him bring in Scott Pioli as Uberlord of Football Operations. Fisher would be my top choice among "available" head coaches. The question is, can we afford to take the hit in draft choices? Now, if we had a personnel like Pioli aboard, I wouldn't hesitate -- he could grab some gems in the later rounds and out of free agency and make it work for this Dolphins team that personnel wise is built to "win now". If we were to stick with Mueller in the front office, it's a closer question. At any rate, given the price, should we be discussing Jeff Fisher in the mix?

No, we really can't. Not at all.

No way... this team is already talent-strapped as it is, giving away draft picks for a coach is a Bad Idea. There are coaches available for no compensation that can do a fine job...

Also from King's column:

Nick Saban Memorial Quotes of the Week

Dec. 11: "I'm not going anywhere.''

Dec. 21: "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach.''
-- Dolphins coach Nick Saban.

Jan. 3: "It took us a long time to get out of there, but we're glad to be here.''
-- Terry Saban, wife of Alabama coach Nick Saban, to reporters upon arriving in Tuscaloosa Wednesday.

Jan. 4: "What I realized in the last two years is that we love college coaching.''
-- Alabama coach Nick Saban.

Jan. 4: "You know what he was as Dolphin coach? A failure. A loser. A gasbag. The tombstone on his Dolphin career reads, 'Talked like a warrior, acted like a weasel.' ... He will be remember in these parts as a quitter and a liar.''
-- Miami Herald columnist Dan LeBatard.

I don't really think we can afford to give away picks. We need to start building through our drafts, or we are going to become the Miami Redskins.

You can't continue to try to build through F.A. You are more that likely to fail.

There are plenty of quality coaches that can be signed. We just have to pick the right one.

"can do a fine job". do you see what you just said. If we paid for Fisher it's because we think bigger, we want a really good coach, not just one that can do a fine job.

For a team that is still feeling the effects of wasted draft picks and horrible trades, I think it's finally time to start using our draft picks in the draft.

I'm with you. If there's anything to be gleaned from the recent dominance of our hated AFC East rivals, the Patsies, it's that coaching/personnel management counts, even moreso than the talent on the field. Look what Mangini did with a Jets squad that was less talented on paper than our Dolphins. Look what Belichick does year in, year out, no matter what stiffs they have to put out on the field as defensive backs, receivers, linebackers -- they win with undrafted free agents, street free agents, and the like. Their best player (and arguably the best player in football), Tom Brady, wasn't a first round draft pick. These guys know what they're doing and it starts with front office/coaching. First round picks will come and go -- a great coach is invaluable. Fisher is maybe not great, but certainly on the cusp of that definition -- he's always been solid and steady, has great coaching philosophies, and would contribute more to the Dolphins franchise than a dozen first round picks of Jason Allen's caliber.

Hell NO! One of the main reasons this franchise is where it's at is that the previous regimes have been giving away draft picks in order to win now. If anything we need to trade older players that still have value for draft picks. Talent makes the coach look good, not the other way around.

What I would have to say is that giving up the #9 pick in the draft is too big a price.

However, if they were willing to talk about a deal that involved exchanging #9 for #19, that would be something we could do. When Jon Gruden got traded for two firsts and two seconds...he was coming off a Super Bowl berth. When Vermeil went to the Chiefs for a first, he had won a Super Bowl with the Rams and was one of the only coaches in NFL History to win Super Bowls with two different teams.

Fisher is not coming off any such accolades. We should not need to pay a full first for him. If they're open to letting him go, I'd say our #9 for their #19. But if they rebuff, we hire someone else.

Why exactly would Jeff Fisher want to leave Tennessee when he has a future - insanley good - star at QB, and a much better short-term outlook?

Why, exactly?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have him, but why would he do that?
