Flashes of Brilliance

It is used by some to describe Brock Berlin's play at QB, in the first preseason game of his NFL career, in the 4th quarter, with other players who will not be in the NFL in one month. Searching the forum gives you three pages in which you can surf through a myriad of posts using this specific phrase to justify opinions and desires. Yeah, I'll admit it is a silly phrase and maybe it's simply ignored and forgotten. It is even used by commentators and analysts (Joe Theismann?) at every opportunity to justify their opinion.

TeeMoney, are you a writer by trade? You're definitely the most articulate poster I've seen thusfar.

It's a phrase utilized when people are trying to state that they see a short glimpse of ability that, could it be developed into consistency, would amount to greatness. In and of itself, as you've noted, it's a nonsensical comment.

Since you are very articulate, and seem to object to the term "flashes of brilliance", what term would you suggest to describe the play of a young player like Brock Berlin? Clearly he has some talent for the game. The question is when he makes an error like on his final pass in Monday's game, is it an error in judgment that is the result of a lack of proper training and experience? Or is it a defect in his mental capacity to understand the game and his assingments? Is it correctable or permanent? Maybe we should say he is inconsistantly imperfect?

For someone who is articulate as you I am surprised u don't know the full and complete meaning of brilliance.

I am not knocking you, because u are very articulate and are very good at what u write.

However, Brilliance in it's most common sense means outstanding skill or intelligence.

So therefor yes he has shown flashes of Brilliance because at times he has shown outstanding skill ie. when he makes a pass that will even Make Payton Manning look twice. He does do that every now and then. Or when he breaks his finger comes back in a play later and hits Chris Chambers on a 40 yard bomb for a TD with a almost perfect pass. That my friend in it's most basic form is a sign of brilliance.

Don't believe me? Well just look up an English dictionary. As a matter of fact I will give u a link to one for you to peruse.

Now again, I am not knocking you, because you are very well spoken.

I dont think we have as big a QB problem that everyone thinks we do. A bad offensive line will make any QB look bad. Take Steve Young for instance, how good did he do with Tampa Bay. When you only have half a second to react what are you going to do (be good?) I dont think so. Watch any team with a good QB, they get much more time to make a pass over 5 seconds alot of the time. Maybe our QB's suck but I dont think they have really had a good chance to prove that they can do the job.
