I know this has been discussed by some of you in certain threads but I don't believe I recall seeing a thread dedicated to this topic. Given what we've seen in the NFL, is it safe to say that system flexibility for the HC and OC should be very high on the list when evaluating candidates? Chip Kelly and Bill Lazor have proven that fitting your system into whatever talent you have on the team is NOT the right way to call a game. Bellichek has proven that being flexible with your calling of a game is the right way. Think about it.

Eagles have their $18M RB on the sidelines for most of the game because he doesn't fit Chip's system. Lazor has Tannehill throwing 65% of the time when is O Line's strength (or better said "less of a weakness) is run blocking.

Bellichek's O Line is decimated so he has Brady getting the ball out in under 2 seconds. He has his defense take away the other teams best weapon, no matter who it is...whereas when he had Moss and an amazing O line, Brady was throwing bombs all game.

Get us a coach that will actually game plan for his opponent and will structure his offense based on the talent, PLEASE!

I think that comes back to the recent quotes about Mr.Ross "now" wanting an entire FO on the same page. Revolutionary I know!

I think when Joe Philbin 1st came to the team we were in trouble right then. I'm guessing at the time Joe didn't really know any real Coordinators and essentially just put a group together to say we have a complete football team. This mixture created a situation were we didn't have nor played complimentary ball. The GM was drafting for one kind of team, The OC call games for another kind of team and so was the DC. All the while, Philbin is coach a different mixture of a team.

Your example with the Patriots is a good example of what I mean. Even within the same side of the ball let take the O we weren't playing complemtary football. We have an obviously bad o-line and we're throwing as much as we were? While we have a decent running game but not running as much? What happens when you throw that much and can't block and then you go 3 and out and now asking your struggling defense(with similiar complimentary problems) to save the day.

When we started to realize these mismatch it essetially was nothing you could do about it. These coordinators like everyone else are creatures of habit and what they know. Now asking Lazor to play more complimentary ball and run a little more is hard for him...seem with the rest. You end up firing them because they can't change strips fast or consistently enough for ya.

Chip, at least, is trying to get his style of players on the iggles roster. He did RB by committee in Eugene. Philly's deal is that Bradford is not mobile enough for Chip's scheme.

Miami did throw too much under Lazor. The problem w/ Miami as was evidenced in the MNF game v the Gmen. Miami was doing well spreading the field and then utilizing Miller & the ZBS with draw, traps, etc... Additionally, they were doing well w/ shorter WCO type passes. Then, midway through the 3rd; they went power running & pocket passing which benefited no one in retro Aqua that night.

I do not think a motivator s/b the primary function of the next HC. It s/b strategist much like Bill in Foxboro.

That is what made Don Shula also great. One of the best football minds ever, and he had no problem being flexible with the talent he had, consider his team with with one of the best power running team in history with multiple RBs that could hurt you, and then won with a passing offense once Dan came aboard. If you want to consistently win, you have to be flexible.

For me - this game comes down to a simple fact of it being about Match Ups. And very importantly, understanding your weaknesses and masking them as best as possible.

Case in point for Miami, LG [all year] and last week at LT - we didn't do anything to combat this weakness. That really bothered me because it was so plain to see.

Great point OP. I couldn't agree more. The best coaches in this league adjust to personnel not the other way around. Belicheck is the prime example. Year to year they have a different offense or defense that brings the best out of their players.
