So what should we make of the Dolphins' offseason so far? Any assessment is incomplete until the draft, but views are mixed.

''Nothing has changed from a year ago,'' Fox analyst and ex-Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson said. ``The defense, even though it's older, is solid. You can bring in all the players in the world -- until you solve the quarterback situation, it's going to be shaky. People talk about Daunte Culpepper's mobility. It's not his mobility -- it's his decision-making.''

Ex-Dolphins fullback and 790 The Ticket's Rob Konrad noted Miami ``has invested a whole lot of money on linebacker when you have other needs. What have we done to improve the secondary? That scares me. I'd love to see the day they allocate funds to improve the offensive front. I've been talking about quarterback and offensive line for years, and it's still not addressed.''

There is also some news about Porter and our interest in Trent Edwards.
Do you agree with the assesments ?

Sometimes the biggest change can come in attitude, but I have to say I'm hoping for an incredible draft. That's where the most changes to our team will come this year.

More from the article...

• Linebacker Joey Porter: Some believe Porter has declined, but Steelers analyst Tunch Ilkin counters, ``Do teams still alter their protection schemes to account for him? They do. He still makes big plays in big games.''

• Tight end David Martin: ''He's the most athletic tight end we've had here,'' Packers analyst Larry McCarren said. ``He can stretch the defense. Some are skeptical of his blocking, but he'll get his head in there. As far as talent, there's nothing he lacks. The only thing he's had is injuries, little things.''

• Fullback Corey Schlesinger: Detroit's Jim Brandstatter said even at Schlesinger's age of 34, he is ``in the top five blocking fullbacks in the league. On the goal line and pass protection, he's vital. [He hasn't] lost much.''

• Receiver Az-Zahir Hakim: ''He's injured a lot,'' Brandstatter said. (Hakim played for Detroit and San Diego last year.) ``He's had problems holding onto kick returns. It appeared last year there wasn't much left in the tank. He's probably lost half a step or a step and when you don't have size, that's a lethal combination.''

• Others: Giants analyst Dave Jennings said he would rank Jay Feely (3 of 6 on 50-plus yard field goals the past two seasons, compared with 2 of 8 for Olindo Mare), ''among the top five to 10 kickers in the league, and he's younger than Mare'' (30 to 33). But Mare had more touchbacks. . . . Bears analyst Tom Thayer asserts special-teamer Cameron Worrell can become a starting-caliber safety. . . . Expect little from guard Chris Liwienski, who started six games for Arizona: ''He's a journeyman,'' Cardinals analyst Ron Wolfley said. ``He's going to struggle in pass protection. He doesn't have good feet.''

Who would we have gotten to be QB in the offseason? Jeff Garcia?

Our team just didn't have the money that others team did. Why I don't know but that's just how it was.

We're going to draft at least 2 OL and I hope 1 QB, so those issues should be a little moot at that point.

What's next?

I think all the second guessing will end after the draft... as long as we dont make any bonehead moves like taking a S or CB with our 9th...

I agree about our QB, OL and DB quality that needs addressing but we all know that anyway and it takes time and good draft picks to address those needs.

That last part really bothers me.

Good read. Both of them, Johnson and Konrad, do have a point. Culpepper is regarded as having issues with his decision making and we haven't really addressed our priority issues yet. But we got the only players that could help us and who we could afford. There were no options at QB or LT (unless you count Petitgout and McIntosh). And whatever options there were at CB were swallowed up. We just need to see what happens in the draft.

And I like this statement:

Notre Dame's Brady Quinn looked very sharp in his Dolphins workout in South Bend, Ind., on Tuesday, someone in attendance relayed. Quinn stayed after for a while to talk with Cameron and Mueller.

No, all the second guessing will end when and if the free agents and rookies prove their value on the football field.

Yeah i know me too but you have to take it for what it's worth. It's also coming from Jimmy Johnson who thought Dave Wanstedt was the best person to take his place as Dolphins HC.

You mean the same Jimmy Johnson that traded up for Emmit Smith, traded Herschel Walker for a boatload of picks and subsequently built a dynasty in Dallas?

He might not have gotten the job done in Miami but it doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Jimmy knows some football, but he's not infallible.

One thing has changed from last year, this Miami regime is not trading away draft picks. I personally like the way this off-season has been handled. I would love for this franchise to handle the off-season much like the Colts handle theirs. Building through the draft.
