The last time the Dolphins played New England, Randy Moss sought out Vontae Davis -- who made an impressive interception -- and Sean Smith to praise the rookie cornerbacks, even after catching six passes for 147 yards. ``He told me we'll be a great tandem for years,'' Smith said. ``That meant a lot. He was my favorite player coming up.''

With Moss and the Patriots on tap, Davis must be sharper than last Sunday, when he allowed completions on all five passes thrown against him, including Terrell Owens' 51-yard score. Davis and Smith show promise, but there also have been expected growing pains.
KC Joyner of ESPN.com's Insider tells us that of 51 passes thrown with Davis in coverage, he has been successful (incompletion or offensive penalty) on only 18 -- a 35.3 percent success rate -- and allowed 10.4 yards per attempt. ``Bad numbers,'' Joyner said. Davis does have two interceptions and is good in run support.
Smith has a 52.4 percent success rate (22 of 42), with 8.3 yards per attempt.

How does that compare to Miami's 2008 starters? Last season, now-injured Will Allen was at 51.3 percent and 7.2 yards, and Andre' Goodman 52.4 percent and 6.8. Smith said he and Davis have been in single coverage more than he expected, but ``it's a challenge you should love.'' New Orleans flummoxed the Patriots by mixing defenses, including some zones and double coverage. The question is whether the Dolphins will try that instead of having Davis, 5-11, again cover Moss mostly one-on-one. Smith, 6-3, said he defended Moss only a few plays Nov. 8 because Moss, 6-4, mostly was on Davis' side and Miami doesn't flip-flop cornerbacks.

Smith mostly defended Sam Aiken, with Nate Jones primarily on Wes Welker. Jones has had a good year (50 percent success rate, allowing 4.2 yards per attempt).
When Davis has been beaten, ``some of it has been technique,'' secondary coach Todd Bowles said. ``He needs to be more consistent.''
Smith's self-assessment? ``Going into the year, I said, `Stay off SportsCenter' and I've been good at that. I haven't given up too many big plays.''
But Smith has no interceptions and ``that's a downer because I've had plenty of chances.''
Former All-Pro cornerback Rod Woodson of NFL Network expects the combination of Smith and Davis eventually will be among the NFL's top tandems: ``What made Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain good -- Davis and Smith have it. I like that they don't back down from anybody and they compliment each other well.''

Patriots coach Bill Belichick raved about rookie safety Chris Clemons' speed last month and predicted he would play more. But Clemons said he hasn't played on defense the past two games; the staff prefers heavy doses of Gibril Wilson. . . . An official who spoke to the Dolphins said finding an outside linebacker to develop will be an offseason priority. Cameron Wake still hasn't convinced the staff he's an every-down player. ``Ability isn't the issue -- it's fundamentals,'' Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said.

Prediction: We will end up cutting Cameron Wake and he will set sack records playing for a division rival.

That's not even a prediction....that is what 95% of this board says about any player we might cut or not resign....

"we have to sign him or the pats will get him".....sad really.

Good stuff Jim1

Thanks. Florida Sports Buzz by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald is the best source of Dolphins news out there. I don't think that he gets the credit or recognition that he deserves.

Not playing Clemons more is a real head scratcher. IMO he's played better then Wilson when given the opportunities. This staff is great but sometimes they can make u scratch ur head

how did Davis allow completions on every attempt his way when he had a pick???

how can these writers not double check their stats before posting

Why is letting a guy develope his whole game instead of throwing him out to the wolves mean the coaching staff will give up on him? I really appreciate that this staff wants to have this kid ready to take on full time responsibilities and be successful at it, not struggle.

Alot of people are so impatient it's not even funny, winning now is important but you don't throw everyone in the deep end and just figure out who can swim and who can't. The kid had to go the kid had to go to the CFL for a reason and their working those reasons out of his game to be a NFL player.

Don't you think he's having some success now because they keep putting him in on favourable situations to his strengths and not exposing his weaknesses. That's great coaching that will probably pay off next year with an excellent starting OLB for years to come.

I think a more important number would be average yards allowed per reception which should be close to 19-20 yards per reception allowed...which I can tell you is at the near bottom of all nfl receivers.
also total yards allowed would be another stat that would be interesting

Clemons was not a impact player at Clemson due to technique and you can assume the phins are working on the same thing. Still the staff on the defense really need to mix up things more IMO. They need to bring a little confusion to the table on that side of the ball instead of just the offense. Buddy Ryan does that and gets more with less. Clemons speed adds another element we need to use and the same thing with the LB's there is a lot more to offer with current talent on the roster.

if we played Wake more I would bet our rookie CB's stats would look much better.

I'm not saying that Smith and Davis are great(yet), but there have been many games where our pass rush has been non-existant. number crunching is stupid in some cases.

I would love to play CB for the Steelers where they have sick pass rushing talent

He allowed completions on every attempt in Sunday's game. He didn't have a pick that game.

no he did not have an INT. The guy was talking about the game last week in which Davis defended Owens.

BTW this is also a good read. This is for those people who say Sean Smith Sucks! He has a very good success rate for a rookie. Teams are throwing to Vontae side alot more.
