Florida State hires Patrick Surtain

Let's not make more out of this than what it is. And for the ones who say this is a lateral move it's throwing **** at a wall that ain't sticking. Surtain was a defensive assistant with the Dolphins. He is replacing Marcus Woodson who was hired as a co-defensive coordinator for Arkansas and was not only the secondary coach, but also the defensive passing team coordinator.

This is a rumor board, what else we got to do but spin rumors :)

As others mentioned above, I do find it interesting he is moving on after one year. It is no secret our secondary has been subpar this year - for a number or reasons.

Is he reading the tea leaves and getting out while the getting is good? Don't know but it is curious.

I agree with you that this announcement doesn't mean anything in a bubble, but it is still fun to speculate!

I agree. I was hoping he and Madison would stick around another year to continue training the young DB's. That Sertain would leave a playoff caliber NFL team to go to the college ranks at the same staff position doesn't look good. Perhaps he has philosophical differences in defensive play/schemes, maybe he has read the tea leaves and knows what's going to happen. Regardless, I wish him the very best going forward.

This is a simple explanation, he obviously got tired of trying to coach Noah Igbinoghene and couldn’t understand how one dude could be so bad. Despite constant effort on Surtain’s part, he simply could not polish a turd. This drove Surtain mad over the course of the season and the only solution was to leave. Thanks Iggy you bum.

This, and also not being able to find Byron Jones.

Also possible he is the fall guy and Boyer threw him under the bus. The secondary was a mess this year (Not Surtain's fault imo, but my opinion aint worth much)
