i missed fluties xtra point and i do not understand why they did that and how it was legal could u plz explain

it's legal, but it has not happened since 1942 so most people alive today have never even heard of it

it kinda looked like a punt but it dropped to the ground and bounced and Flutie kicked it in. as much as i hate new england that was awesome

Congrates to Flutie for making it but I can't believe how much th annocers kept talking about it.

My first reaction was "hey! A punt through is illegal!" Then it showed it hit the ground. First time ive ever heard of it

The difference in a punt as opposed to an extra point is that the ball must be kicked from the ground. Drop kicking used to be an art but it is not nearly as reliable and has a lower trajectory than the "placed" kick that's why it was not used anymore. I am actually a pretty good drop kicker and as kids playing sandlot we would try all the time.

So the ball actually hit the ground first, before Flutie kicked it?

Why did New England do it? Just for fun?

Its one of those quirky rules football has. I think its just called a drop kick. We knew about it in highschool and used to always screw around with it. Never used it in a game though.

Flutie converts NFL's first drop kick in 64 years
NFL.com wire reports

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (Jan. 1, 2006) -- Doug Flutie added another oddity to his football résumé when he converted a drop kick in the fourth quarter of the New England Patriots' game against the Miami Dolphins.

It was the league's first drop kick since the 1941 NFL championship game, according to the web site for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

With starting quarterback Tom Brady sitting out most of the season-ending game, backup Matt Cassel threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tim Dwight to cut Miami's lead to 25-19 with 6:10 left in the game. Flutie, who was listed as the No. 3 QB, came in for the extra point and lined up at quarterback.

After a timeout, Flutie took the snap, dropped the ball and kicked it off a short hop through the uprights for one point. He ran off the field and embraced coach Bill Belichick.

According to the Hall of Fame site, Chicago's Ray "Scooter" McLean converted the last drop kick in the Bears' 37-9 victory against the New York Giants on Dec. 21, 1941.

sure why not? first one in sxty something years. I think it is great, in a game that mattered...this was not a throw away point, Flutie did something timeless and wonderful. No diss involved, actually it had less chance of success. Very cool in my book...

Why was Cassel allowed to come back in if Flutie played. Doesn't the third string QB have to stay in the game if he comes in at QB?

I started a thead about this at the same time this tread went up.

They did it b/c if they missed they would've still needed a TD to win the game. Somehow I don't think NE did what they could've done to win. I mean, Cincy lost, and NE coulda had a higher seed. Plus I had the feeling for whatever reason that NE wasnt too concerned about winning, hence playing 2nd/3rd stringers in the 2nd half

At the time I thought it was really stupid and classless but then I took a look at it, and realized it didnt really matter, its the same 1 point no matter how you do it and Im happy for Flutie...Ive always liked doug

And no the Third string QB doesnt have to stay in
