People need to stop blaming Robert Esche. Granted he will never be mistaken for Bernie Parent, but the real bandit is Bob Clarke.
He signed Rathje and Hatcher to big deals, without realizing they did not have the foot speed nor the passing ability to make it in the new NHL. Fast forward a year later, instead of learning from his mistakes, he snatches Gauthier and Nolan Baumgartner, who are also incapable of competing in the new NHL. Then there's Freddy Meyer who has been horrible after an ok season last year. Joni Pitkanen is basically the only quality d-man on the Flyers blueline.
The first order of business would be to clean house starting with the coach. Hitch is a quality choice, but players only listen to you for so long. Eventually they tune out, it happens to all the great ones. Then you get rid of Clarke and you start rebuilding with Carter, Richards, Gagné, Downie, Umberger, Giroux (who's IMO going to turn out better than all the aforementioned players) Gagné and Forsberg. That's a quality group right there.
