There was an extended conversation about the NT position on the Dolphin defensive line. Some said Vickerson and Wright could play the position and it didn't matter if they were tall. They cited Baumhower and others who have been less that ideal for the position. I asked Jason Cole of the Miami Herald to give a response based on his contact with the Dolphins and this is what he said:

QJason, Do you think Vickerson and Wright are really considered NTs? I only believe there are a couple of guys on the roster that meet that position description (Traylor and Green). I see Vickerson and Wright as 4-3 DTs or 3-4 DEs. How does Miami view the NT position in terms of the current roster and do you think they will draft a NT high?

ANo, they aren't NTs in a 3-4 scheme. I think you have it right and that's why they could easily take an NT at No. 16 or somewhere else in the draft.

I know some of you will cut down his perspective and that is ok, but at least he has regular contact with the Dolphins and might have more team insight to the situation.

I totally agree with Jason Cole. Don't forget that Capers is also a 3-4 guy so Miami will definitely look to shift the defense more towards the 3-4. Saban may be looking at Gabe Watson, maybe with a slight trade down, in the first round. I could see that as a possibility. It's also why linebacker has to be high on the Dolphins list as well. You have to have a lot of quality there in the 3-4.

I really think manny wright will develope into a NT player. He is up to 6'5 330 range and with that frame and talent i think hed be a nice NT in the future.

As was debated yesterday, I will take the position that he is too tall, and if you look at his game at USC, he was more of penetrating guy versus clogging the gap. That is not to say he couldnt learn to be one. I just think he has to get stronger and stay low, which he was reported to not do at USC.

I believe vickerson is a DE in the 3-4 system but I do believe that Manuel Wright is a future NT in the 3-4 system. I asked him that question ebfore in the past ( a few months back) and he agreed with me then. I wonder what changed his opinion now.

I'm not going to argue that he is too tall, but I don't think he has the skills necessary to play the possesion.

yes accordiing to BB especially and the scheme we both run they said or he said actually that the LB position is EXTREMEMLY important that needs much talent.

I dont think there is any real "shift". Saban has been looking at 3-4 personnel all along. Right out of the gate last offseason he grabbed Carter and Holliday.

I dont think Capers is really going to cause the defense to "shift" alot either. Capers has a philosophy that fits well with the Dolphins defense last year. He's got experience running a blitz-heavy defense, and experience doing it with both a 3-4 and 4-3.

Why don't we just make a defensive tackle forum? This has been coming up everywhere lately.

Yes, it's sort of strange, isnt it? All of a sudden everyone seems to realize that one of the Dolphins bigger holes left is at NT.
