Football Outsiders: NFL's Most Underrated/Overrated

Ok how about the fact that 2 years ago (with good QB play) Marshall was considered a top 5 reviecer in the league. He's just hitting his prime and is one of the most talented wideouts in the game. Is he overrated in fantasy football? Maybe. But player wise he's still elite. Just because his stats don't prove so doesn't mean he isn't elite. ESPN tends to just look at stats, but as a wideout it doesn't matter who you are, you have to have a decent QB. As far as vontae. He's a freak athletically. How can a guy be overrated in his 2nd year, and first under a new coordinator?

As far as Marshall, they're saying he's didn't play like an elite receiver in the league last year. And they're right: he led the league in drops, IIRC. He didn't have a lot of YAC. You can blame the QB as much as you'd like, but I'm not talking about "raw" stats like yards or catches or TDs. You can't just pin drops on the QB, and while YAC is partly QB play, is also partly on the WR.

Then with Vontae Davis, yes, you can certainly be in your 2nd year and be overrated: see Sanchez. Vontae talks like an elite DB, but he's not there yet. According to Football Outsiders (same guys that wrote the article) Miami was ranked 24th against #1 receivers, but 8th against #2s. So perhaps Sean Smith is performing better; then again, I don't know how much the Dolphins set best-on-best.

Still, to be overrated doesn't mean Vontae sucks. To say he's not elite isn't bad per se; he's still very young, as you point out, and he is improving every year. DBs usually take the "big leap" in their third year, so perhaps by this time next season he will be thought of as - and actually be - an elite CB in the league.

Please don't put forth arguments without merit. Yes, it was on ESPN, but these guys are not mainstream media. They delve really deep into tape and statistics to form their opinions, and they certainly don't "love" or "hate" someone. They just speak from what the evidence shows.

FWIW, they consider Sanchez one of the most overrated players in the league.

How can you say this is fact? Does not compute.

overrated-
vontae davis- he is ranked top 10 in the league. No way can that be true, he plays for the dolphins
brandon marshall- see above

underrated-
mark sanchez- we love the jets and this guy is a "winner"

espn sucks. Plain and simple

espn saying sanchez is underrated and marshall and vontae is over rated sounds like there suckin *** if you ask me

There's a reason why I unsubscribed to this garbage. Can't believe I even had it in the first place.

Outside of this week because of his comments, I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about Vontae. But according to ESPN, he's so overrated. Give me a break. :rolleyes2:

Great response.

The media always gives more credit to players on winning teams than they deserve, Sanchez (I believe) is enjoying those benefits now. I still don't understand all the Vontae talk, I have no faith in our pass coverage and it hasn't proven a thing. Obviously I like Vontae but I wish he would just shut up and play the best he can. I'm not a fan of Marshall, has all the talent but any benefit he adds isn't worth all the drama and rifts he causes with the players.

You recall incorrectly. Wes Welker led the league in drops with 13. Reggie Wayne was second with 12 and Marshall tied with Terrell Owens for third with 11.

According to ESPN, Derrick Rose > Lebron James.... Nuff Said.

I can't believe they tried to say that Brandon Marshall being the #1 target on his teams is a bad thing....
