There's a lot of people who think Frerotte's safe on the roster. I'm happily not one of them. We are 8 days into the offseason, and so far we've talked to Couch and the McNair talk is heating up. I can't tell you if either of those QB's is the answer. But, I know one thing.....

Neither of those QB's is going to be brought in to back up Frerotte. Neither of them look like they would be the long term QB solution. Which leaves us all one obvious determination: Frerotte ain't safe or all that wanted on the Phins. The team is looking at a better starter in '06 to run the offense while whatever rookie we pick up learns the O.

I have my own favorites that I hope we pick up at QB. But, that isn't part of this thread. This about the plain and simple facts at our finger tips.

My list of active QB:

1. Brett Favre
2. Aaron Brooks
3. Gus Frerrotte
4. Steve McNair
5. Tim Couch

True it makes no sense that we are that satisfied that we stand pat at QB and there is no guarantee that a young QB will fall in our laps.

I think Nick is all about value and objectively looking at every option. If you could replace Lemon, an undrafted FA from SD's practice squad with Tim Couch, a high round draft pick with starting experience for essentially the same $, why not? Gus, Couch and new guy. Sounds better than Gus, Lemon and new guy to me.

I think Frerotte is safe. He played very well to finish out the season, and he's even gone on record challenging anyone we bring in to unseat him in 2006....

There's no way McNair could come in, and in one off-season, unseat Frerotte. GF has a huge advantage over anyone we bring in to compete based on having a full year with our offense....

PHINZ RULE!!!

I am sure Gus is feeling SAFER these days as it seems we will be unable to find us a quality starting QB to replace him. I am sure Saban does not want to visit the Wanny mistakes of past days. Say hello to the Gus "ferret" for a second season.

Keeping Gus as starter is an exact repeat of the Fielder debacle. That was teh mistake Wanny made trusting a backup Qb to do a starter's job.

It's not like I am in favor of "The Ferret" hence the name, but studying the current situation I don't see a better alternative glaring at us right now. Probably will get better as FA opens.

No it's not. Frerotte is a much more accurate passer, and has better arm strength as well. You really can't compare the two IMO. Feidler made alot more bonehead throws as well....

That I agree with, but Saban isn't that stubborn. He'll have us a new, young gun soon enough. That QB jmay be backing up Frerotte a year, but at least we'll have something for the future....

I agree, but I dont think anybody on the roster right now is going to be able to come in and unseat Gus as the starter. Even if we do pick up a FA, the only person that could come in here and take the spot from Gus is Dante because he knows the offense also. I have a hard time believing that Saban is going to bring in an older FA vet to take the starting position. I could see them though bringing in a younger FA like Rivers or a younger guy and giving them the chance to start as long as they know the offense well by the time the regular season comes around.

I just think that starting anybody next year that wasn't on the roster this year would be a mistake for the simple fact that we seen this team mesh very well at the end of this season. To ruin that offensive flow would be foolish, and not something that I see Saban doing.

Frerotte has a better arm but accuracy is not close to fielder. I compare that both of these guys have no business starting for the Phins.

If we can nab Chris Simms, that would be a good thing. He is young, has quite a bit of upside, and has shown he can throw the deep ball. I don't see how we are going to get them since he is supposed to be the future for Tampa Bay though.

Gus is clearly the favourite to be Miami's starter next season, and so he should be. I'm amazed at how many Gus-haters there are on this board. He's no Brett Favre, but he is a decent Qb, who understands the system and makes very few mistakes. Speaking of Favre, I doubt Saban would be interested in him, should he leave the Packers. He's getting on and it would take at least a year to learn the system. Couch may be brought in as a back-up for insurance, but I don't see him beating out Gus. Mcnair is old and injury prone, and again, would take too much time to learn the offense. The only QB I can see taking over the reigns is Culpepper, but he would be expensive, and cost the Dolphins too much IMO. I'm still not a firm believer in his play.

I think the Phins will draft a QB on first day, develop him, and go with Gus. I think this would be the wisest move.
