Apparently you don't remember the years of dealing with crappy kickers and inconsistent field position. The guy had 1 bad 1/2 half season and everyone wants to move on. So we can what, get an average veteran and save a million dollars? Or worse, get a rookie. Before last season he was arguably our top 1 or 2 player the previous few years. If they can't restructure, they are better off giving him one more season before making such an important decision. How many of you were calling for Carpenter's head?

Way too much money for a punter. Even Reggie Roby wasn't making near the compensation that Fields is getting and he was a better punter in his day.

OP has a good point, but Fins still have their hands tied. Fields needs to restructure or hit the road. Need to place some importance on this, but not as much as suggested in the other thread (taking a kicker and punter in the first 2 rounds 
)

When you have the 28th most punts in the league, you don't need to spend top 6 money. Kyle Loomis in the draft would be better. He simply is replaceable and not worth that salary.

I just don't think non-playoff teams can afford to pay big $$$$ to punters and field goal kickers. As inconsistent as Sturgis has been I would still rather be 8-8 with him then to be 9-7 and stuck paying Carpenter $ 5 million or $6 million a year.

Our kicking game was trash last year. Field is set to make 4 mil and most teams duo of a punter and kicker don't cost that much alone.
I appreciate what Fields has contributed over a long period of time. He has been very reliable but his punting was woeful in the first half of last season (and for this we paid $4M). In short, unless there was a good reason for this, he was poor value and we can find someone a lot less expensive who can kick further. Brandon represents a potential cost saving and deserves to be cut.

I'm a firm believer that kickers and punters should never sign big $$$ contracts, they will never see the end of those deals and are just asking to be cut. If you're a kicker and your team offers you a $5 million a year deal you say hell no and run out the GM's office as fast as your little kicker legs can go.
The same is true for back up quarterbacks. It's to easy to price yourself out of a job.

Fields stunk last year - no hang time and the coverage couldn't get down there. W kickers and punters it's so mental. Both our kickers looked like they lacked confidence last year. Once it's shot it's hard to get back. Remember Uwe Von Schaaman? Was never the same after missing / blocked 2 FGs to win that wild '81 playoff game. Scott Norwood couldn't hit anything after the miss in the SB. I'm ready for a clean slate at these positions.
One mediocre year and suddenly our pro bowl kicker who has been top of the league over the past 5 seasons is average to below average. Some of you are hilarious. Also, to the person who asked if we will be upset when we lose Denny, the answer is only when we have a few bad snaps. There is a reason Denny is the longest tenured Dolphin. It's not all about flash. Again, I can guarantee a lot of people asking for him to be cut were saying the same about Carpenter and then bitched the entire next season.
