Please go watch the end of the Cowboys-Giants game. Tom Coughlin managed his timeouts in the same manner in nearly the same situation with exactly the same time remaining in the game. He needed to preserve time because the Cowboys were in field goal range. The issue was that the Giants defense failed to hold on 3rd down. Once the Cowboys converted they were able to kick the game winning field goal with no time remaining.

Philbin adopted the same strategy yet the defense allowed Tolbert a huge gain on 3rd and 2. Philbin was being aggressive. He showed faith in his defense. He showed faith that his offense could drive for a game winning field goal with about 1:25 remaining if his defense held.

And Tom Coughlin is a two time Superbowl winning coach who we can assume knows something about clock management.

Score was tied in Giants game. Big difference. At this point we should have been happy with forcing a field goal to tie. Instead we gave them more time to win. The Cowboys were in position to win with a FG so time was needed to have a chance to comeback and either tie or win the game for the Giants.

.

So basically your saying Philbin used poor judgement with his faith in our defense and our offense

Not at all. I'm saying that you can't have it both ways. How many threads have been started saying that Philbin needs to be aggressive and grow a pair. I was pointing out that his management of the timeouts showed that he had indeed grew a pair. To me it showed complete belief in his team.

Another reason I admired his aggressive use of the timeouts is because he was probably being realistic that the Dolphins weren't winning that game if it went to overtime. Given the way the 2nd half had gone, can we at least agree on that?

Plus Carolina had enough time to go for the touchdown anyway. After the late hit personal foul, they were essentially in field goal range with just under 2 minutes remaining and 1 timeout.

Just checked the game log. Panthers had a 1st and 10 from the Dolphins 29 with 1:45 remaining. That is when Philbin used his 1st timeout. Are people honestly arguing that with 1:45 remaining and 1 timeout that the Panthers did not have enough time to go for a winning touchdown if Philbin had not called timeout???

Philbin deserves to be bashed for being Joe Philbin. Cam Cameron's illegitimate brother. Not a leader of men. Not a NFL head coach. Not a man who puts his players in a position of winning.

**** the timeouts. WIN ANYWAY.

SHM.

Joe Philbin is no Tom Coughlin.

We lost the game because we let them score a TD instead of keeping them from crossing mid field....hindsight is 20/20 if he knew they would score a TD he wouldn't have used them...I don't fault him for this, I fault or run Defense

Of course Philbin cannot match Coughlin's credentials. That being said the Dolphins didn't lose 38-0 to the Panthers either.

We lost the game because we only scored 16 points. We had a couple of 4th and shorts we didn't go for. We didn't try a fake punt, we didn't have any radical new wrinkles. The bottom line is, if you're not getting it doen the conventional way on offense, you either capitulate or get it done the unconventional way.

Philbin and Sherman need to get innovative. A few deep balls to Wallace does not equal innovative. A few screens to Wallace that have never and continue to never amount to more than 2 yards and a cloud of dust do not equal innovative.

We're playing not to lose, which is showing up on the scoreboard. Play to win, goddammit.

Wasn't a fan of Philbin when they hired him, and I still doubt him and the rest of the coaching staff.

If you're up 3 you don't want to give them time to set up the possibility of getting a TD. You force them to hurry and hope your defense contains them to a FG which sends them to OT. The Giants game was tied I believe which means that the FG wins or puts the opponent in the lead with little time left on the clock. Big difference in the situation.

I completely agree with this. He wanted to have as much time for the offense to score and he thought the defense could hold them to a game tying field goal.

What does that have to do with anything? I agree with how Philbin managed his timeouts.

See earlier post. When Philbin called his 1st timeout, the Panthers had a 1st and 10 from the Dolphins 29 with 1:45 on the clock and 1 timeout remaining. That's an eternity in the NFL.

Again, by stopping the clock it gave the Panthers time to get together and decide on a play. Forcing them to burn clock in a hurry up is advantageous in that spot. If the game is tied or the Dolphins are losing I would agree.

You could also make an argument that the defense should have let Tolbert score on the first run instead of stopping him inches from the goal line.
