This is my first post on here, mostly because I generally like to read other peoples opinions more than state my own. But I've gotta ask, why is everyone so upset that we didn't draft a corner? If you look back to 2 years ago, with pretty much the same defensive backfield we were ranked I believe 4th in the league in pass defense.(Don't quote me on that I havnt exactly done the research but I know it was in the top 10) I know that stat is over-inflated because we were putting so much pressure on QB's. Last years pass defense was so bad because we couldn't have sack a QB in a wheelchair. A 3rd rd corner at best was only going to be a nickel guy this year anyway. I love the way BP and co. built the lines. We had way to many holes to try and fill with 1 draft. Now that it looks as though we will be keeping JT,he will be a great mentor for both out new DE's and teach Jake more than he will probably want to know about pass blocking. Im really looking forward to the training camp news and the start of the season.

I agree. We had a great pass rush that year and with merling and JT we can get back to that high rank. Plus hopefully there wont be as many injuries to our secondary this year

Ya Know, hate to toot my own horn here, but wasnt it I who said that we dont really need a cb? Safety is another deal IMO, but generally speaking, I kind of knew it, even though I changed my opine based on what Sparano said.

The answer to every question about CB has one very simple answer.

VONTAE DAVIS
in next, yes next, years draft

Can you say HOF, mark my words

we were 4th in pass defense 2 years ago? Weren't we like first this year?

Means nothing . . . when u can't stop the run.

Point is . . . our CB's looked good because they weren't tested nearly as much this year . . . especially late in games.

If u take away the 2 Patriot games . . . I'm sure this team had the #1 pass D (Patriots pass on every play so teams who play them . . . especially twice . .. probably have inflated stats)

However I wanted a young CB very much in this draft. But you couldn't pass on Merling at 32 . . . he fits the mold of Parcells . . . and was a mid first round talent.

We definitely gotta go CB in the next draft . . . because all of our CB's will be over 30 (unless u count Daniels and the guy from Dallas . . . which aren't in the top 3 on this team) . . . but we should be fine with Allen, Lehan and Goody . . . all 3 have good speed and good cover ability . . . also they are good against the run.

Think of how dangerous they can be now that we have the pass rush. We just cut down crucial time that a qb had to make a decision. This leads to more sacks, more interceptions, and most importantly, more 3 and outs.

lol who says we have a pass rush . . . we were supposed to have that last year with JT and JP . . . and it was horrible (not blaming those 2 guys . . . there was alot of reasons why we couldn't get to the QB last year . . . but with those 2 names . . . we were SUPPOSE to be unstoppable). . . this draft didn't address the pass rush at all . . . . this draft was about stopping the run (Merling is not a pass rush specialist . . . he isn't Gaines Adams). . . . we will see if we can rush the passer if we can limit a teams run game and force them to throw more . . . and then we will see how good our DB's are.

By addressing run defense you address pass defense. The reason we didn't have much of a pass rush was because the run would keep blitzers and linemen back playing the run. If you can stop the run, at least the inside runs, with your front 3 or 4 you can afford to focus on the QB more (think play the run on the way to the QB).

As far as not drafting a corner, the Fins improved their DB play if they can get to the QB. Find me a good DB that doesn't have a good pass rush in front of him. You won't find many if any. DBs have to guess on any route because they can't put their hands on a WR. If you have a good pass rush you can always guess the short route and be right most of the time. It'll be interesting to see how Asante Samuel does this year without the NE pass rush.

Fully agree . . . we will find out if we have a pass rush . . . because hopefully teams wont be running all over us like they did last year. I love these BORING drafts . . . the have the biggest impact for a team.

Very well put.

Good first post. I agree with you, we have to start building in the trenches first and we had too many holes to fill in just one year. great post.:hi5:

Here's the answer, you can only draft good players when A) there are good players to be drafted and B) you are in position to draft them.

This was the deepest CB draft in recent memory with about 20 legitimate NFL prospects that have starting potential. We didn't draft them this year ... and there will likely not be another draft with so many quality prospects at CB in it for a while. So, if you didn't get your CB now--and we didn't--that may mean you're going to be hard pressed to get one later.

So yeah, I'm upset about not getting a CB in this draft. Kinda like I was upset about the Portland Trailblazers not drafting Michael Jordan.

With so many good CB's available this draft, many good CB's could be had for great value later in the draft. In the future when there are considerably less good CB prospects we will have to draft them higher to get the same quality, and if there aren't too many we may have to overdraft them just to get them at all. We can find space-eater 34 DE's every draft and we don't need to draft them all that high.

Damn, if only Bill Parcells had consulted you on who you thought he should pick. We wouldn't be in this mess. What the hell was he thinking?

He makes a good point tho . . . you find these small school space eaters every year in the later rounds . . . and we need youth at CB. I don't know about 20 guys that will start in this draft . . . but you had some nice prospects.

I think Bill Parcells had a plan to rebuild the lines in one draft and he did just that . . . and he had his guys pegged out . . . and probably would have drafted a CB . . . but the Merling pick was just too good to pass up and so was Henne at 57 . . . those 2 picks (DE at 32) probably are different if Merling is not there at 32 (maybe Henne is 32)
