For those who blame this losing on Daunte, I just wanted to share some stats with you.
Daunte was 23 of 39 for 249 yards and a touchdown this week. Not huge numbers, but he isn't the reason we lost. That is a QB rating of 84.1. Much better than most QB's we have had in here.
So far on the season, Daunte has thrown for 929 yards, good enough for ninth in the league. To compare, Tom Brady is 16th and Carson Palmer is 11th. Again, not astounding numbers, but solid.
Statistically, Matt Hesslebck, Steve McNair and Drew Bledsoe have worse QB ratings than Daunte (along with other less notables).
In fact, for the season, Daunte is on pace for 3,700 yards passing and is completing 60% of his passes. Teams like New England, Baltimore, Carolina, Minnesota, Denver, Pittsburgh and St. Louis are below in terms of completion percentage.
Daunte isn't playing awful. He isn't carrying the team, but he isn't the reason we are losing. Probably the biggest stat is the 21 sacks through 4 games. Oakland is second with 19. Houston is third with 15 (thanks in large part to our defense).
By contrast, Miami gave up 26 sacks all of last year.
Daunte is just not getting the time to pass. When he does, he is moving the ball down the field effectively enough.
The real problem has to do with our offensive line not playing any type of football but bad and Mike Mularkey making some questionable play calls in critical times (the two point conversion comes to mind).
I guess my point is this. Before blaming Daunte for the teams woes, we need to take a look at some stats and realize that the blame shouldn't be placed solely on him.
