49ers | Team not tagging Peterson as franchise player
Fri, 17 Feb 2006 14:54:19 -0800
Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the San Francisco 49ers do not plan on tagging LB Julian Peterson as the club's franchise player. The 49ers would have to make a one-year, $8.75 million commitment if they designated him. 49ers head coach Mike Nolan said he's not sure if the team will make an effort to re-sign Peterson once the March 3 free agency period begins. "I know we'd love to have him back, but when 31 other teams are out there, it's hard to say," said Nolan. "If the (salary) number takes us out of the realm where it hurts the football team, we have to be smart about how far we go."

I have alot of doubt that we will sign him.

I just dont think Saban would want him because of his health issues

If Saban thinks it's worth the BIG $$$$, then I'm on board....

But he may eat up too much Cap, given our other options...

I'll trust Saban's judgment....

That's pretty good news. I wouldn't mind having him, but his price tag will be a big one. He'll take a big chunk of our cap if we were to sign him and he has some injury concerns. I wouldn't mind us signing Will Witherspoon. He's not quite as good as Peterson, but he IS good, makes plays, and would be alot cheaper.

This sounds more like a Saban-type FA signing...

Good production ......... good for the Cap

I would agree about Witherspoon so long as he would operate well in the system Saban is implementing.

If Saban decides for a 3-4 (which seems to be the general consensus) then I guess the usual thinking is a linebacker like Witherspoon is a bit on the small size (He's listed at six feet one and 231 lbs). Then again, Peterson is only a few pounds and a couple of inches bigger than Witherspoon, so it's hardly like he has what people would regard as ideal 3-4 size either.

On a personal note, I reckon it seems the size of a linebacker (or any player) is somewhat overrated and players like Sam Mills, Dat Nguyen and (for a completely obvious example) Zach Thomas only help increase this belief in me. Witherspoon seems like a smart, reliable and capable linebacker I would like to see playing as part of a strong Miami defence.

Except for the fact that 6'1" 230 pound linebacker is something you would see only on special teams or maybe uhh, strong safety on the Dolphins.

Witherspoon is an OLB. Julian Peterson isnt much heavier, but he's got longer arms and a much better sense of leverage then virtually anyone his size. He's used to playing up close to the LOS, as he's got experience playing Strongside linebacker for Saban, and rushing-down DE.

Witherspoon would have to be an ILB in Miami.

Those are all interior linebackers, mind you. And in every one of those instances, these smaller 3-4 ILBs have a bigger ILB 245+ pound linebacker next to them in a more forward-moving role. Miami has Channing Crowder, Donnie Edwards has Randall Godfrey, etc. and so on.

You cant start two 230 pound interior linebackers in the 3-4.

Many of us expected this much. This is great news! Now, if only Peterson meets us half way on the contract as he remembers his MSU ties. :D

The understatement that will hopefully work in our favor. Saban himself said JP graded the highest ever in his D.
