the media keeps talking about skipping our turn, its seems like the dumbest idea in the world

either we:

a) really like one guy and start negotiating ASAP

b) we like 2 or 3 guys equally and we start bargaining with them(ie offering them more money than the #2 guy is certain to get(say 33 million guaranteed)

c) ask for trouble and watch our choice sign late, get injured/suck

forfeiting the pick will solve nothing

my preference would be to play guys off of each other

I certainly don't think a DE/OLB or OT deserve an increase over what Russell got last year

PS I really like Ryan, but if we don't start negotiating with him soon then I would have to believe that he is not our guy. if a QB is your guy and your owner really hates hold-outs then there is no way in heck that you wait until the draft starts

I'm not really sure what your saying, but we can negotiate a contract even now I believe. There should be no reason to wait till we are on the clock. Houston selected Williams over Bush in large part because he was more "signable", they went over terms of a contract prior to the draft with both from everything I heard.

I am saying we should take the path of least resistance and not try to get cute.

We can negotiate whenever we want, I wasn't anticipating that we would until sometime in April.

I am worried that we are going to not show our cards until the draft in hopes of a trade-down that will never-ever-ever-ever happen

forget trading down or letting the clock run down, lets get a guy signed before the draft

I get the impression that neither Longs` are prima donna`s that will hold out till the start of the season, but locking up a contract would be nice. Houston did it with Williams and got a solid player to boot.

I had the same reaction when I saw Florio writing on the possibility...AGAIN. It's a blueprint for problems IMO. An agent is going to make signing signing the guy near impossible in that scenario. He's gonna want #1 money even if the guy was the third player taken.

While the cost of the #1 pick is a disadvantage, it does still have its advantages and one of those like the orig poster said, is the ability to negotiate a contract ahead of time. The Phins need to be a lot more concerned with doing that than trying to save a few (million) bucks by letting other teams jump ahead.

i hate when people keep bringing this up. there has to be about 30 threads about this now. it is a stupid idea and should end with this thread.

and yet here you are in this thread......

Actually im just tired of seeing these threads, and the only reason im back in here is cuz im board and this is the only thread that has been posted in since i was on here last.
