Forget Franks, Sign Nick Novak

10 touchbacks on 78 kickoffs last year...there's a reason he was cut.

I'd rather have a reliable fg kicker than a kickoff specialist. Give me Novak he's a beast

Field position is a huge and hidden part of the game that is mistakenly overlooked. I'd choose to defend an offense that is forced to start at the 20 any day of the week, rather than take my chances in kick coverage.

Agreed, and I also really believe Miami is going to be very successful in the redzone this year, and less need of having to make difficult FGs.

Last year Miami reached the redzone more times then any other team, in doing so also failed to get the TD more times then not. I believe the coaching staff took that very seriously this season, and because of that, Miami has better RZ targets, and Philbin will take more 4th and goal opportunities.

For our kicker, field position will be vital, as long as he is consistent from within the 45, with the very rare occasional 50+ yarder to win a game here and there at the end.

How many kick offs are ran beyond the 20 yard line?

I'd rather have a guy who can kick it between the uprights than a guy who can blast it in the end zone. We spend roster spots on "special teamers" like Paysinger, Thomas, etc. yet we would prefer an inaccurate kicker who can boom it. Doesn't make sense.

Kickoffs are more consistent than FGs. What that means is that you can count on a good kickoff guy year in and year out, but FG% has a lot of variance.

What doesn't make sense is saying we prefer an inaccurate kicker.

Franks, FG: 3-3 (including a 51 yd), XP: 4-4.

Stop using facts. You'll hurt somebody!!

If he's so good why cut him?

Turns out Novak had a 84.6% FG rate last year (22/26), not the 90% reported by the OP.

Novak had been the Chargers’ starting kicker for the last several seasons, but saw a slight decline in production last year when he converted 84.6 percent (22 for 26) of his field goal attempts after averaging over 90 percent the previous two seasons.

Also to note:

His biggest weakness was kickoffs, as he lacked the leg strength to consistently get the ball to the endzone. Novak failed to have a touchback during the second half of the 2014 season.

To be fair Sturgis was perfect this year too with a long fg of 49 yards so they were equal in that battle.

True and valid, BUT Sturgis' track record speaks (mumbles) for itself.

'13 - 76.5%
'14 - 78.4%

With a career of 14/20 from 40-49 yds and a meager 6/13 from 50+

*Alright, best of luck to Franks, but I've had enough of talking about kickers for one night. :chuckle:
