What Sherman aspires to be
The Bears release of former No. 1 choice Marc Colombo was a bold one, but not unexpected. Colombo never showed the footwork to be a good left tackle, which had been a long-term need for the Bears before John Tait moved over to the position this year. Colombo was a big, mauling type of right tackle, but injuries killed his playing time. When the Bears signed Fred Miller, it was an admission Colombo wasn't going to be in their plans. Teams don't hand out $6 million signing bonuses if they have faith in the former first-round pick.
With that roster spot, the Bears made a curious signing. John St. Clair has been talented enough to tempt the Rams and Dolphins to start him at right tackle, but he hasn't played well enough to keep those jobs. He's a decent backup, though, and that's what his role will be in Chicago.
