I watched some of the Philly and KC game. Gordon looked good. He was constantly breaking tackles and had alot of drive. He was always pushing and never went down soft. Now I know Philly has a much better Oline but still like I said it looked like he was actually running. Is he actually talented and worth that third we traded for? Or is it just an abarition. Does anyone else have a take on Gordon?

Surtain I have been quite impressed with. Honestly. KCs pass defense has been down right brutal but everytime I see someone getting burned it is never him. Plus I see him laying some hits on people. There were a few plays yesterday when he was 1 on 1 with Owens and didn't falter.

I noticed the same things. Imressed with Gordon, not so much with Surtain. Seems Pat would make a play, then get beat right after.

I think we are in a good position with what we have for the record. Saban and Co. have done a wonderful job of navigating the waters thus far.

I think we should have kept Gordon if only to force Philly to give up a very late pick for him. They needed him over there and are using him pretty extensively. We could have bluffed them into a 6th.

Surtain I miss. Sadly he had to go for cap reasons... but if there were no cap in the NFL, I would have loved to see us give him whatever he asked for.

Gordon is a decent change of pace back from Brian Westbrook. More a physical back, IMO. That said, given the devaluation of even a franchise type RB (which Gordon is not)... I'd say he's no where near the 3rd rounder we gave up for him. Travis Henry for as little as a swap of 3rd rounders? 2nd round for Corey Dillon? Nah, we got taken advantage of on that one. Sadly, they knew our GM only had one season to make a case for his continued career in the position... and caught him taking risks that most GMs with job security would never do.

Yeah I didn't even think about how Edge and Alexander couldn't fetch a 2nd.

One thing I wondered is why Miami wouldn't have released Travis Minor instead of Gordon. then try to peddle Gordon and then resign Minor back after. I can't see any team signing Minor but then again I could be wrong.

Yeah, Minor was a surprise for me personally. I've never really been too impressed with Minor. The only thing I can think of is that Minor is a better ST player than Gordon.

Minor is a better special teams player. With the wealth of backs we had, and to get the numbers down, Gordon had to be cut. Would have been nice to get something for him, but I think its just one of those things that happens in the numbers game. I'm still not sold on him though, and we obviously gave up too much to get him.

yea we kept him because he is good in ST . He is quick and can do the job if Welker goes down

Surtain is a top corner, but when you are on the third year of his 50 million dollar deal, he is getting older, and loses 1 step, what do you do then? 14 million dollar bonus is hard to cut.

Minor can do returns etc. if Welker goes down (fair chance and even more so now that he's running slot receiver), is a pretty consistent change-of-pace back and has remained relatively healthy while with us, besides last year when every RB got hammered and we were on #5 by game 4 or something.

That makes sense that we would keep him over Lamar for ST. But if we did release him would there really be any other team out there that would pick him up. We could always sign him after we worked out a trade with Gordon. Then in worst case scenario if we still couldn't get a trade done we release Gordon and sign Minor.

Gordon wasn't worth trading for, the Eagles never overpay for anyone they weren't going to fall for a bluff. Gordons got like 18 carries and 57 yards on the season they really dont use him much and hes not that good when he gets in. That trade was a complete bust for us, this guy is practice squad material.
Surtain is stuck on a terrible defense so no one will be giving him any credit unfortunately. He was on good defenses here and not too many people seemed to recognize him as one of the elite Dbs in the league.

I don't think he'd last a day after being released. Someone would sign him as a backup or if nothing else upgrade their practice squad in case of an emergency in the future.

In relation to us keeping Minor instead of Gordon I have a few reasons;

1. The obvious, Minor = good ST player

2. Is healthy more often

3. We have 2 bruisers and another fairly big back in Morris, Gordon is the same kind of back as those 3 and Minor is a good change of pace.

I still dont see why we got rid of Surtain. If we had kept him, we would have a legitimate shot of doing some damage this year. We would be very close to the top defense in the league.

When we got rid of him I rationalized we would be in a rebuilding year and there were whispers that he had a degenerative knee condition. But it seems to me, that at the end of the year that is going to be the biggest mistake Saban made with his personnel moves. Hey nobody's perfect and he certainly made enough quality moves to give him a pass on that one but it sure wouldve been nice to have Surtain playing for us this year
