Former teamates, coaches describe Campbell as intense leader

Good article about Dolphins new coach. Described as leader of leaders.

The story is nearly two decades old, and it’s certainly not one of Dan Campbell’s favorites, but it says plenty about why Dan Campbell is where he is today and where he plans to be tomorrow.

The date was Nov. 29, 1996, the day after Thanksgiving, and Campbell’s Texas A&M Aggies were getting throttled. As much as it ate at him to see Texas 51, Texas A&M 15 on the scoreboard, what Campbell, a sophomore tight end, saw on his sideline disgusted him about as much.

Miami Dolphins interim coach Dan Campbell watches the players during NFL football practice Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015, in Davie, Fla.

“We were getting our lovin’ butts kicked by our biggest rivals,” Campbell recalled, although he did not use the word “butts” in recalling the story to author Rusty Burson for the book “100 Things Texas A&M Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die.” “And I saw people on our sidelines laughing, cutting up, and not even caring.

“I knew right then, right there, that something was going to have to change. I didn’t care if I was an underclassman. I wasn’t going to let this happen again. It was time for a leader to emerge, and I wasn’t about to wait to see if someone else was willing to do it.”

There was a group of us that were the leaders of the team,” former Aggies quarterback Randy McCown says. “And then Dan was kind of the leader of the leaders. He was always one of those guys, if it calls for 10 wind sprints, he ran 12 and just expected that kind of commitment out of everybody".

Lets hope those leadership qualities are good enough to get this group going in the right direction. I'm rooting for him!

Good read....thanks for posting.

He's an easy guy to root for. I would like nothing more than for him to do great and be our next coach. That would be the ultimate scenario. Long shot, but you never know.

Thanks for posting, good story. Yeah would be great if he rights the ship, a win vs Tennessee would be a nice first step. If we can avoid further shakeups through winning, that would be nice!

He seems like a great leader. Only problem I see is no mention of strength at the X and O's of the game. Which means heavy reliance of coordinators. One whose under fire for a ineffective offense and one whose a first time guy also thrust into the position.

Man I like what Nguyen says, I hope somehow, someway this can be a totally different team the rest of the season.

“He rallied the troops,” Nguyen says. “We set goals and he set all of us down. He said, ‘Man, that taste in my mouth will never happen again.’ … I hope he can translate that to his players. If they can have half of what he has — the belief, the dedication, the work ethic — it’s going to be a totally different team than what you saw the first month of the season.”

I loved the part about him and the other captains choosing to practice at 2:00 in the afternoon. I could see the Satan bubble used a lot less in the future.

He's intense.. but can he call a game? We'll see.

Ya'll wanted a leader of men right? Here you go. The x and o part is not really what he needs to worry about for now. The players have to execute. When Campbell sees something not right, he gets on his coordinator to change things, not stand there looking into space.
