That's a good comparison, remember Sanchez went bananas because his coach was giving reps in practice to the other qb last season one time.
Henne's development was definitely stifled with the way he was handled and with the focus and attention spent on the wildcat.
That said, there is more to it than Hyde scribbles. Romo was not exactly a high draft pick. Look at what Andy Reid has been able to do with his QBs. A good offensive minded coach and agressive OC and QB coaching makes a HUGE difference in developing QBs. Don't forget, Hyde is a m0r0n.![]()
Some teams do help their backup QBs, BTW. Dallas seems to have done that with both Romo and Moore during the Parcells regime. Philly seems to have worked pretty hard with Vick even when he was the third stringer to get him to be a real QB rather than an RB who throws. I think that NE does, too, which is why Brady and Cassell both had success.
Cincinatti decided from the get-go that they were going to groom Andy Dalton, their 2nd rounder, to be their starter. He faded somewhat toward the end of the season, but it will be interesting to see if being treated like a 1st rounder enables him to find success.
I will also add that using just playoff wins doesn't tell you if a QB really is "elite" or not, just how good the team is. All it says about the QB is that he's competent enough not to lose the game. Schaub, for example, has never won a playoff game but Mark Sanchez has won several. Who would you rather have? What about Matt Moore vs Tim Tebow as your starter? I know I'd take Ryan Fitzpatrick over Vince Young without batting an eye.
A lot of times, poor teams like the Bills and Fins, are the only teams that are willing to take chances on non-first round QBs as even backups. Meanwhile, failed starters from the first round like Rex Grossman, Vince Young, and Matt Leinart keep getting recycled among the better teams.
