Found this article on Fox Sports. Point 5 is about Davone Bess.
Point 5: Dolphins WR Davone Bess will once again make 31 teams wonder how they overlooked him during the 2008 NFL Draft.

The former Hawaii wide receiver really impressed me back in February, 2008 during a one-hour session where selected members of the media were able to view an hour of quarterback and wide receiver workouts at the NFL Combine. Afterward, I wrote that Bess, "did some outstanding work during the gauntlet drill, showing his quick reaction time, good acceleration and strong concentration skills. But he also impressed with his cutting skills while running his routes and for his ability to locate the ball and make over-the-shoulder catches in stride."

Despite three consecutive seasons of at least 1,100 yards receiving, including an outstanding senior year in which he made 108 catches for 1,266 yards and 12 scores, no one used a draft pick on the talented young player.

I'm not sure who was stunned more by that oversight — me or Davone Bess.

"Obviously, it was really disappointing not getting drafted," he told me during a recent interview. "But at the same time, I use every negative thing and turn it into a positive. I try to just go out and prove everybody wrong."

Bess signed a free-agent contract with the Dolphins and made the roster. And when Greg Camarillo was felled by injury, the hungry rookie stepped in and made people notice that he has the skill to play in this league.

During the final six games of the season, Bess averaged nearly six catches per game with 35 receptions for 366 yards. Over the complete span of his rookie season, he pulled in 54 balls for 554 yards and one touchdown.

Denver's Eddie Royal (91) and Philadelphia's DeSean Jackson (62) were the only rookie wide receivers with more catches. But considering they each started 15 games compared to Bess' six, you have to believe that Bess could put up some big-time numbers this season if he can pick up where he left off.

"I feel good right now," he said. "Obviously, having a year under my belt, I'm going out there a lot more confident. I can just go out there and play ball now."

The reason Bess dropped so far was not because of him, but because of his QB. The QB looked like a joke at the bowl game and at the Senior Bowl and made everyone look at the production from Hawaii as a result of the system and "poor competition." Everyone's stock from Hawaii dropped really fast...as a result...we get an an overlooked receiver!!! LOVE'N IT!!!

Wasn't the Hawaii QB drafted in the 3rd Round? I thought he was considered a good prospect?

The OL for Hawaii in that bowl game played just awful. That was the only game I saw and the recievers could not get in their breaks. Bess is tough like Welker and we got lucky to get him as a FA. Lets just hope just because we got him for free we do not give him away for free either. Look at what Welker is still doing and lots of folks here bragged on the picks we got for him and those picks look to be a waste now.

**** Welker..IMO Bess can do more than run across the middle..IMO Welker is overrated..he does the same bull**** route

Yep...Georgia made them look like a second-rate school...and it may not have been his fault, but that was the beginning of his slide...after he stunk up the Senior Bowl...he became nothing more than a "flier" pick...

I believe his slide took the receiving corps with him...

Technically our Dolphins also passed on him during the draft.

Should we also be second guessing our regime?

Welker overrated maybe, but he makes a great threat for pats specially with moss. I hate when we had are old coaches because they did not know how to use him. now we can see what can really do and i hurts every time I see do something good. We also f up with Chris, so all in all lets not f up Bess he has more talent then we even think. For greg it may not be a great year because of his injury... mark my words I see a lot of pro bowls for him and if we make it to super bowl my bet are on him being mvp... i mean seriously before he got injuried he caught every pass. it was just amazing.

Bravo. I guess we should be second guessed for over looking the obvious about our own regime. :chuckle:

I don't follow this line of thinking. I mean, I understand, but Bess dropped, without a doubt because of the destruction of Hawaii at the bowl.

Seriously...His body control is unreal, and, his hands are clean and quick. He fell into the UDFAs with tons of other guys, yet, we were able to sift and pick him. I think it's more of a testimate to the FO than not.

But is Hawaii's poor performance any more telling on a players skills than someone who played at Hampton or Akron?

I'm not an FO guy. If I was an expert, I'd have a job right now......

I just look at Bess, and, watch his feet and body movement. That's fairly definitive of a player, no matter what school they play at.

Your stock as a player does sort of rise and fall with your team though, to a degree. Not all the time...But it does.
