Franchise Quarterbacks

How many multiple win Super Bowl teams had a "Franchise QB"?

Then answer ALL of them!

You can win one Super Bowl with an average QB but you will NEVER become a dynasty without a very good to great one.

NE
Dallas (twice)
Pitts
SF (twice)
Miami
Green Bay

It is great balance that wins championships.

How many multiple win SB teams had great teams on offense and defense?

Then answer ALL of them!

You have to put together a great team. Not everyone has to be a star but the team overall has to be great together.

We also had great backups like Earl Morrall and Don Strock for many years. :)
I thought we gave up too soon on Brian Griese....now we are stuck with a couple of "prentender" franchise QB's. :(

I agree. Plus, Tampa's line is just as worse yet Griese still performed decently with the long ball. And,for the moment,Tampa has their franchise QB and franchise QB-in-waiting, while we have 3 career backups and 1 rookie competing for the job.

All of those, with the exception of New England, were accomplished pre-salary cap. Before the salary cap, super bowl teams were usually loaded. Not anymore. With only so much money to go around, is the franchise quarterback still the best way to get a championship?

great post agree with almost all. Sometimes it takes a break. What would have happened if Scott Norwood makes that field goal against the NYG. What if D. Smith doesn't make "THE CATCH" against Dallas. Sometimes it is just the breaks. If Vern Denherder is 1/2 second sooner on Stabler and is sacked instead of the wooble ball to C. Davis. Miami wins game, crushes Pitt and wins 3rd straight SB against Dallas.:couch2: :woot: ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) AHH the memories!!!!

Who ever said there was some kind of guarantee with any draft pick or any player at any position? Thats not a reason to give up and stick with mediocre players. We have terrible Qb's, not even decent ones. Maybe we don't need a Peyton Manning but we need a really good Qb. Im so sick and tired of people bringing up Trent Dilfer as if thats the ideal blueprint for a title. It was a complete fluke that the Ravens won with him. Yes they had a great defense and jamal but they had little to no passing and they were winning games 10-3 and 14-7, notice they couldn't do it again? One fluke season in like 30+ years of superbowls is not the way to go. Notice the Ravens got rid of Dilfer right afterwards?
We did give up on Griese way too early. Funny, I wasnt on this board but I was on others when Griese came in. Little to no one wanted to give this guy a shot and once he had a couple of bad games everyone ran him out of town. He's lightyears better than what we have. We gave up a 2nd round pick for a complete dud when we just could have given Griese a decent contract, thats Spielman and Wannestadt for you, thats why both are gone.
If you don't have a franchise Qb you keep looking until you get one. If it takes 20 years you keep looking. You dont ever settle for terrible Qb play like wannestadt did here and in Chicago. Notice he is coaching college ball again? Saban will fail in the NFL if he doesnt get a good Qb. No coach has ever succeeded for any long length of time without a quality Qb. Saban needs to address the Qb situation next year period.

I am a die hard dolphins fan, but anyone who can say that Tom Brady is not a special qb is an idiot. The guy doesn't just manage the game, he is a star on a great team. Come on people..............Ya Steve Young wasn't that good either,,,,,,,good one..

What makes him any better than a Bob Griese or a Phil Simms? Those 2 guys were very good, but certainly not among the all-time greats. When the Pats aren't clicking, neither is Brady. Great QB's like Marino or Elway could carry their teams on their backs and almost single handedly win a game. Please don't try and tell me that Brady has that ability.
Those who think he is better than Peyton Manning are idiots.

Cmon I hate the Patriots but theres no question that Brady is one of the premeire players in the NFL. Hes put up good numbers and wins big games. He may not break Manning's TD record or touch Marinos numbers but he wins and he makes big plays in those wins. Brady is headed for the Hall of Fame, first ballot.

You would never here me say that Brady is better than Manning. But he is an elite qb. And I agree with the previous post he will be a first ballot. Why is Steve Young better than Griese or Simms? Do I really even have to answer that. Take the blinders off people Young was one of the greatest qbs of all time. Also a no brainer first ballot hall of famer. And I have watched many games where Brady was solely responsible for winning a game, he is a gamer period. How come when Manning throws for 300 and 3 tds he is a genius, but when a qb who quarterbacks our arch rival throws for 280 and 2 tds every game he is average. Look at Brady's stats and career again, it is nothing short of spectacular. Damn all this ignorance is making me sound like a Brady fan.

Next years draft

Vince Young
Matt Leinart
Marcus Vick
Omar Jacobs
Chris Leak

Hopefully one of these(My fav is Young)will be a franchise QB.

I always wondered what might have happened if Warfield, Csonka and Kiick didn't go to the World Football League. I'm sure those three would be worth at least 10 points in the infamous Raiders game you mentioned. Maybe Miami wins 3 or 4 straight titles. Who knows. I mean it would be like Pittsburgh losing Swann, Harris and Bleier (sp), or San Francisco without Rice, Craig and Rothman.

Good stuff. I think you can also say the same thing about a quality defense, though. Can you name a super bowl champ that didn't have a quality defense? Don't get me wrong. In the best case scenario, Miami has it all - the franchise qb, the dominating defense, a running game that can run effectively when everyone knows you need to run the ball etc. I'm just saying that in the salary cap era, there are different ways to win. Dilfer showed that even if it was just one season. Brady and New England has been the exception not the rule as a pretty complete team. Most of the salary cap super bowl teams have had flaws, some even major flaws. Putting all the pieces together is possible, but much less likely in the NFL of today.

That was thier last year. Miami went downhill for a few years until wood/strock.
