Franchise Quarterbacks

that was the worst draft pick of the wanny era. brees was on the board, as well as kendrell bell, matt light, fred smoot and chad johnson; but wanny takes jamar f-ing fletcher. :fire:

Especially considering that we had Madison and Surtain in their prime still, drafting a nickleback with a first rounder when you didn't have a bonafide QB, a complete set of wideouts, or even a franchise back at the time was completely ignorant. Wanny drafted every year like it was going to be his last with no eye for the future, he thought nothing of trading away the future for a pick he might use this year.

How many multiple win Super Bowl teams had a "Franchise QB"?

Then answer ALL of them!

You can win one Super Bowl with an average QB but you will NEVER become a dynasty without a very good to great one.

NE
Dallas (twice)
Pitts
SF (twice)
Miami
Green Bay

It is great balance that wins championships.

Pitt did it twice as well, and I think you left off Denver with Elway as well.

Plunkett, who was a former first pick in the draft, won two in Oakland though not in a row.

What makes him any better than a Bob Griese or a Phil Simms? Those 2 guys were very good, but certainly not among the all-time greats. When the Pats aren't clicking, neither is Brady. Great QB's like Marino or Elway could carry their teams on their backs and almost single handedly win a game. Please don't try and tell me that Brady has that ability.
Those who think he is better than Peyton Manning are idiots.
So what do you want for the Phins? A Manning/Marino/Elway? We've had one of those before and it didn't produce the expected outcome, a champioship. Can't hang your hat on a great QB alone...must have a great team. Those three guys can tell you more than anyone.

We need to get a system type QB. The day of gunslinging are over (see M Vick !! A f'ing waste of a pick and millions of dollars) this is the age of organized offensive procession downt he field. That is why if you have 1 top 10 RB you are in good shape let alone 1 top 5 guy (Ricky). More and more both in offense and defense a segmented approach to attacking and defending is more prevelent (see NE). All this to say we need a young smart decent arm'ed QB and the system will take care of itself

Not because I am a die-hard Dolfan, but I think any qb with a good head on his shoulders could go play in that system.
Drew couldn't. To think he had way more experience than Brady. Brady is one smart qb. More than just above average mentally.

Next years draft

Vince Young
Matt Leinart
Marcus Vick
Omar Jacobs
Chris Leak

Hopefully one of these(My fav is Young)will be a franchise QB.

fins need a QB badly.
browns need a QB badly.
titans possibly need a QB (they do have volek can step up)
cowboys maybe need a QB (who knows about henson)
cardinals need a QB badly.

all the other teams are set at QB.
and chargers have to give a QB away too.

so add brees or rivers to that list.

i think we should wait till next years draft to get our franchise QB from the six choices of 1st round talent out there.

no matter where we finish one of these five guys will be available to us.

Thanks. I guess my memory is failing.

Uh, last time I checked Bob Griese was in the hall of fame, I'm pretty sure that puts him among the all-time greats.

Terry Bradshaw said in an interview in the late seventies that Bob Griese was the best QB in the game.

It strikes me that many of the younger fans have no appreciation for just how good Bob Griese really was because of how good Marino was.

I agree, between the rookies and either Brees or Rivers we should be able to land a QB next year.

I did a count like you did in my head and I cam up with 18 teams that under no circumstance would draft a QB in round one.

There is some serious talent on this list, I hope we can grab one and move forward.

Vince Youngs passing ability at this point leaves a lot to be desired.

Some of these guys will be juniors that leaves open the possibility they will return to school like Leinart did.

I would add some names to the possibilities though:

Reggie McNeal Texas A & M SR

Jared Zabransky Boise St JR

The Giants won several with Phil Simms. Is he a franchise QB? It's funny how some of those teams you mentioned (Steelers-Bradshaw) only had a "franchise QB" AFTER they won a SB. Bradshaw was much maligned his first couple of years with the Steelers.

Younger fans? I'm older than you and ACTUALLY watched him play in person. You miss my point. Griese was a very good QB, but he never had the physical ability to carry a team on his own. He was very good at using the players around him, but those players had to be pretty good also. I think he, Phil Simms and Brady all fall into that category. Marino made even average WR's look good and he elevated the play of all those around him.
Marino and Elway were unique in that respect.
