I know we are already sitting very nicely under the cap....
Iv'e got a question that may be a stupid one...

Are the dolphins putting the franchise tag on anyone this year? or even thinking about tagging anyone?

I don't believe they have anybody worth franchising this year.

No one's getting franchised and as of now we are $20 million over the cap. A few changes and we'll be under.

no, you only franchise players when they are FA and are really good players who you don't want to lose

What was the reasoning behind not franchising Pat Surtain last year?

He wasn't a free agent.

Actually, I believe we are only about $8M over the cap...but point well taken...

and the reason we didnt franschise sammy knight or any other of our players hitting the market, when u get the franshise tag you get paid a salary of a top 10 player at your positon and it becomes very costly. Whitch is the reason why brees isnt geting the tag this year, its like 10 million in gurandeed money, that if they dont trade him have to pay him.

He wasn't a free agent. He was in his last year of his contract and rather than get ready to pay him alot of money next year (2006) or just lose him to free agency, we traded him for a 2nd round pick.

None of our FA's are worth 6 million +.

Franchise tag works that you are signed to a 1 year contract. The player is also forced to sign this essentially. There are no talk or anything.

You get the salary for that year of the average of the top 3 players at your position. They may have changed this to top 10.

The reason you see it used for trading purposes is, you don't incur the the bonus money against your cap in the case of a long term contract. So this makes it easier to tag them and trade them and not take a cap hit.
