We need some youth on the DL, and with the signing of Wilkinson, that's one less spot for one of the younger linemen. In the past, the Dolphins typically keep 9 DL. 5 DE's & 4 DT's.

So the DE's are listed as Taylor, Roth, Carter, Bowens & Shaw. We're probably going to keep only 4 this year; so that leaves 5 DT spots.

DT's: Wilkinson, Traylor, Holiday we know for sure.

Wright, Basket case = Trade bait - not a factor

Evans & Vickerson & Zgonina

Assuming we keep 5 DT's, Who's out & WHY?

Shaw did not show me much last night.I know he disappear's alot during the play.

keep both young DT's and sacrifice Zgonina maybe trade him for something/anything. remember next year we have Rod Wright coming back, all of these young guys have small cap figures so if they can play they stay.

I think unfortunately that Zgonina could be cut. This guy plays hard and he is a very solid rotation guy, but we already have 2 DT over 35 and we need some youth there so keeping Zgonina over Vickerson or Evans does not make sense to me.

I am all for letting go of Zgonina and letting Evans and Vickerson stay. Evans Possible PS since he is a rookie but Vickerson seems to make plays as well and he is a big guy. Now that Big daddy is here, I think we should do that and get younger.

Holy crap, just as I write that two others write the same thing at the same time. Its official, keep the young ones.

Zgonina

The trouble with getting rid of Zgonina is that the guy:

1. Has a great WORK ETHIC
2. is a LEADER
3. He makes PLAYS
4. He is VERSATILE & can play DE if need be

The guy just SHOWS UP when needed. He does'nt complain, keeps his nose clean & makes plays. He is reliable & disciplined. Every year since he's been a Dolphin, people have been writing him off; and every year he's on the team. Ever wonder WHY?

It would be tought to get rid of "CANKLES", even though he is old.

Vickerson has not shown really anything to make me think he is anything other then another guy.

I dont think Zgonina is very likely to be cut because he can play basically every technique and position on the interior D-line, NT/DT/DE, 1-gap or 2-gap, and c an even long snap. He also looks like the only guy with experience and size to play NT who can penetrate on pass rushing downs.

Right now-

DE- Kevin Carter/Matt Roth
NT- Keith Traylor/Dan Wilkinson/Fred Evans
DT/DE-Vonnie Holliday/Jeff Zgonina
OE- Jason Taylor/David Bowens

zgonina is a very solid player.......we should put shaw on our training squad and keep both vickerson and evans....but if its has to be one of the two i think i prefer evans

My guess is that Wright will get stashed on some sort of non-football list for the year and that we will keep both Vickerson and Evans. If it comes down to just one, it has to be Fred.

I agree completely I love Zgonina and I think this year and maybe even next he will give us more than Evan or Vickerson will. The only problem is what about after that when Zgonina, Wilkinson, and Traylor will all be over 38. Not too many players make it to 40 in the NFL and to get rid of a guy who may be able to start for us while they are in their 20's is not a good idea. Still I don't think it's an easy decision to get rid of Zgonina and I'm glad I don't have to make it.

Josh Shaw is actually listed as a DT not a DE. With the addition of Big Daddy Holliday would be freed up to play more snaps at his original position of DE.

If it breaks down the way you think it might with 5 DE's and 4 DT's then I think both Evans and Vickerson make it and Zgonina gets cut. With one proviso, although Vickerson did well in last years camp he spent the season on IR and has been mostly invisible this year compared to Evans. Even Zgonina played well last night so it would not be a total surprise to see Zgonina make it and Vickerson head to the PS.

Dan Wilkinson is 33. As far as Nose Tackles go, he's still got a couple of good years left on his tires.

DT and NT are different positions. "DT" is essentially the second "big" defensive end. It's just that Jason Taylor generally has his hand down, which makes the guy to the interior of him, despite positioning, a DT.

Wilkinson will mostly play NT but probabaly see some time at DT, but positioned more to the interior then Holliday.

Shaw has been the 3rd string DT.

I loved Rod from the get go when i saw him in Texas and when we got him I acutally was in denial bout it.
