Man this guy is something. What a year he has had, 155 receptions, 1,770 yards and 19 touchdowns. They say he's slow and runs in the 4.6 range, but no one can cover the guy. I know he plays in a pass happy offense, but wow. At 6'1", around 210lbs I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on him with one of our 6th if he's there. The projections on him I have seen so far are 5-6 round.

The 114th ranked pass defense in the country with players that will be bagging groceries after their collegiate career is over can't cover anybody....

Always be leary of these 4.6 guys that put up guady stats in wide open offenses.....if it was a reflection of the players talent instead of the system...then there wouldn't be so many of them doing it every year.....followed by bombing in the NFL...

The best way I've found to truly gauge players like this is to see how they get off press coverage in the senior bowl drills, etc. versus less talented players than the starters they'll see lined up across from them every Sunday in the NFL...

Barnes has certainly put up the the numbers....but I don't see a guy that's proven he can beat press coverage....and I don't see a guy who can create a lot of seperation with his route running against NFL DB's...and not an experienced blocker.......I see soft hands...and what looks to be a decent possession type receiver in the NFL....draftable player but 5th-6th round seems about right...

Agree and looking at his season when he played Boise State they pretty much shut him down. I have seen him play a few times and he seems to slide well in and out of his routes. You can see he doesn't have blazing speed, but he reads defenses well and knows how to get to the open areas.

Like you said it will be interesting to see how he does Senior Bowl week, but you have to love his soft hands. I wouldn’t use anything higher than a 6th on him, but he may have a better hit opportunity than many 6th round picks.

I posted an article about Freddie Barnes a few weeks back in the draft forum...

and also so what if he runs a 4.6 look at all those catches he has. Very similar to our very own Davone Bess coming out of Hawai'i. Dont understimate the ability to get open and catch.

I'm not underestimating his ability to get open and catch.....but ask Devone Bess if he'll ever get open and catch over 100 balls in the NFL like he did at Hawaii in a spread offense against WAC defenses...

By the same token....I'd advise you not to overestimate those inflated stats....Mike Hass agrees...

i didn't know you had to catch 100 passes to be successful in the nfl.

Right now ill take Davones 71 catches and the season is not over he could end up with 80. With a great game. Not to mention if Davone was in a Pass Happy Offense he could get close to 100 passes a year, similar to Wes in NE.

My point is ill take Freddie Barnes in the 6th or 7th easily if we need a 3rd 4th type WR. But we have enough of those right now. I dont think taking him in the late rounds is "Overestimating his Stats".

after we get a #1 on the field we're fine at WR for quite some time. barnes is decent though, if there was a need there i wouldn't mind using a late rounder on him.
