Free Agency and the Best Player Available

There's going to be a lot of talk about how the Dolphins' free agent moves will affect what we do in the draft. Some have already speculated that since Flozell Adams re-signed with the Cowboys, we're gonna draft J. Long, or how if we sign Pace, we won't draft C. Long. I say HOGWASH!!!

The Dolphins suck. We're terrible, with glaring needs all over both sides of the ball. We need to take the best guy on the board, each time its our turn to select. Maybe next year we can address needs, but not this year. We need solid football players on this roster.

If we pick the best player available every time we select, we will be laying or foundation for the future. That's all I care about right now. The future.

While I agree in pricipal with what you said... what happens if the BPA every time the Dolphins are up to make a pick is the same position as the previous pick?

Good point. Then I revise my approach to the draft:

Pick the best guy available, unless you already picked a guy at that same position with the immediately preceeding pick. However, I see no problem with taking 2 WRs. If we picked a WR in the 3rd round and another in the 7th, I'd be happy.

When you say best player there, it is always a matter of opinion. Just on this board alone we have J. Long, C. Long, Golston, Dorsey, Ryan, McFadden all vying for who is the best player available. If you do a poll, they all will get votes. So while I agree with the best player pick, your pick will almost definitely vary from mine or anyone elses. Especially after round 1 as players drop. The most important thing is to hit on our picks.

Its very rare that you actually get a singular best player available. Generally what you get is a best group of players available and from them you pick the one that best satisfies your teams needs. If we get Pace, its clear we dont need OLBs and since Long and Gholston arent head and shoulders above J Long and Ryan there is zero reason to keep them in the mix.
