Free Agency Breaking News- NFL - Breaking News Thread 2025 Offseason

As it turns out, the 2025 cap number for new Miami Dolphins QB Zach Wilson will be much smaller than originally reported.

Based on the figures at the cap website overthecap.com, Wilson will count a modest $2.2 million against the Dolphins' 2025 salary cap after it was first reported that number would be $6 million.

Wilson still has a $6 million guaranteed salary, but it now includes his $4.75 million signing bonus spread out over the next five years.

This was done by adding four void years to the contract.

There are two consequences to that decision, the most positive being that it turned Wilson's 2025 cap number from the 11th highest on the team to the 23rd highest.

On the flip side, if the Dolphins move on from Wilson next off-season, it would cost them $3.8 million against the cap, as opposed to not cap charge had the void years not been added. Additionally, if Wilson does become a free agent next off-season, the Dolphins will no longer be eligible to get a compensatory pick for him because he technically will have been released as opposed to being an unrestricted free agent.

I don't even understand why we had to pay him $6M.

He was a 3rd string QB last year and I doubt there was much of a market for him.

James Winston only got a 2 year $8M deal and he is more highly regarded around the league than Wilson.

I think a 1 year $3M or a 2 year $5M deal would have made more sense.

Yet some on here were waxing lyrically last week with the fact that Grier and co weren't doing this, as instructed by Ross in case they all get fired 😂

Denver did try to sign him. But we offered more. I think he will pleasantly surprise us and he’s much better than any backup we’ve had since Fitz. And he’s still young.

Interesting. Hopefully the idea is that if he plays well and fits the system they will extend and wipe out those void years. If he doesn't play well then he leaves with a modest trail of cap hits and the comp pick probably wouldn't be worth much in that scenario anyway. My preference would have included a team option for another year at double the money, but Wilson probably would have rejected that out of hand.

To back up Nix, who they REALLY like.
Yes. Denver has a chance to “build” Nix the right way, with no baggage. But they were impressed with Wilson and his arm. As you just mentioned, if Tua goes down (heaven forbid, but it’s very possible) Wilson is auditioning. Let’s see if McD is a real “QB whisperer.”

Would you want Winston or Jones as more than a temporary patch... ever?

No.

Noooooooooooo. Signing Wilson was a very smart move. He has enough physical talents (mobile, strong arm, creativity. If he can get the playbook down (there are some similarities with BYUs offense) and really keep focused, he could be quite good. But mental discipline is primary.
