I'm back in Florida BABY!
Ok, to break away from all the LaVar Arrington talk for a bit, I just wanted to take time out look at something concerning free agency as a whole. I know there have been many Dolfans concerned with why we're signing players like Sedrick Hodge, Will Allen, Renaldo Hill, Andre Goodman and the like instead of the so called "Big named/Big Money" free agents that are the flavor of the month type. Well, it all has to do with signing the right players and not always the best players. Here is a list of the New England Patriots Free Agent Signings prior to the 2001 season and their 1st Super Bowl of 3 over the next 4 years, and you tell me, who are the "superstar" names that jump out at you..

Anthony Pleasent, Ken Walton, Chris Sullivan, Antowain Smith, Je'Rod Cherry, Mike Compton, Marc Edwards, Damon Huard, Larry Izzo, Marty Moore, David Patton, and Roman Phifer.

Now, many people, including Don Bands of CNNSI want to grade our free agency period thus far as failing. I know, it's purely his opinion, and I ask you, how do you think many of us and Don Banks graded this free agency list of the Patriots in 2001?

like herb brooks, coach of the 1980 olympic hockey team said.....im not looking for the best players, im looking for the right ones.

I agree. I am happy with the way FA is going. Saban did the same kind of things last year and it worked out great for us. We signed one big time contract last year just like we did this year (Carter in 2005, Culpepper in 2006). Guys like Holliday, Traylor, and Spragan last year were sorta no-name signings, and they were a big part in our success last year.

The guys we picked up so far will help us in creating the "team" atmosphere. Things are looking good.

I'M TOTALLY FINE WITH THE WAY THINGS ARE ... NICK IS DOING A BETTER JOB IN THE OFFSEASON THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY 30 YEARS OF WATCHING DOLPHINS FOOTBALL (no offence to Shula I know things were different at times):dolphins:

I love this quote from Gil Brandt in the new PBP article(just talking about Vince Young visting):

"I think Nick Saban is one of the smartest guys in the whole world," Brandt said Sunday. "I've said that repeatedly. When you see a talent that's going to help your team in the long run, you might take a chance on taking that player."

It's about finding the right pieces, when you're building a puzzle, you examine every piece to find if it fits right.

I was real happy when we got Will Allen. But overall, im happy and i cant wait till the Season starts.

must be Bang Em Akrid right?

The thing is Saban went out and signed 3 not so brand name DBs. He has to see something in them that other coaches don't. If will be really interesting to see if guys like Goodman, Hill and Allen work out. Because quite frankly I don't see us drafting a CB now that we got 3 through free agency.

Saban must be pretty confident in these guys to trust in these guys to lock down the secondary.

I totally agree! You need to find players that will fit in with the system both physically, technically, mentally and personality wise within the team. Also, even if all these players don't become top grade starters under Saban like so many assume will automatically happen (and I trully hope it does), the team has been able to add quality in depth to the team which over a long season filled with injuries could get us those extra wins that push us through the playoffs.

Go FINS!!! :1st:
