Free Agency is Fools Gold, Rome wasn't Built in a Day, Neither are Super Bowl teams

Dude! Seriously I want what your smoking. This team is not headed in the right direction. Bad decisions for 10+ years! Saban, Cameron over Tomlin. DC over Brees. Long over Ryan...

Dude! I'm smoking something called reality!

If you read the post you'd understand this is in defense of Jeff Ireland.

Saban, Cameron, Culpepper over Brees, none of those were his/ or current owner Ross' decisions.

Long over Matt Ryan is turning out to be the right pick since Ryan has proven himself to be a limited player who sucks in anything resembling a big game.

The need to build through the draft is an NFL truism, but it's easier said than done. As Ireland keeps proving. Don't go overboard with this rejection of free agency. Charles Woodson was a historically huge pickup by the Pack.

the florida panthers might eventually pass the fins in relevancy in mia..that's how bad it's looking.i do know one thing,it will get better!

This OP and people like this are saying this same thing past 4 years...

Another blind faith defender...

7-9
7-9
6-10.

Ireland has a plan (LOL).

How long will your Nero Rome take to build OP? Not longer than the bronze age I hope!?!

hmm 7-9.7-9 6-10 thats the right direction. Then we lose langford to free agency and trade our pro bowl receiver.
We cut Carey and Bell.Jason Taylor retired. How are we a better team than even last year at this juncture. we have replaced them with Artis Hicks , Jereome westerman and Richard marshall. Marshall is a good player at safety but as a starting corner is not even an improvement over Smith.

Now After chasing option a,b,c we have signed option f at qb to compete for starting job.

7-9, 7-9, 6-10; hmm, seems like we we're stuck in a rut.

So we fired the coach. Bring in a new coach, did you honestly think we wouldn't be rebuilding a bit?

Marshall- Will be suspended, and doesn't fit in Philbin's plans, save money sell high on him and at least get some compensation....sounds like a saavy move to me

Carey- Past his prime injury waiting to happen, that cost more than he was worth on the field.

Bell- Old and expensive. I loved Bell, but if we're going to rebuild a little here we need to give some of our younger players a chance to get on the field. Reshad Jones might be a better SS.

Jason Taylor way past his prime.

Do you see the common thread there? Old, past their prime, expensive. These are the type of people you have to move on from if you want to continue to grow.

Now let's look at the signings:

Hicks- depth and experience on the line, can compete for a job.

Westerman- again, a good depth/ experience signing, he wasn't expensive

R. Marshall- Could be the answer at FS; maybe nickel CB at the very least good depth/ experience signing.

option A was kind of something they had to do and you know Ross was all about, I doubt Ireland or Philbin were all that enthused with this idea

B, Flynn, was going to be brought in only at the right price. If Philbin was that high on him I'm sure we would've broke the bank, and I will take Philbin not being that high on him as a sign that we dodged a bullet.

Alex Smith I could quite possibly see as someone they wanted to compete with or start over Moore short term, which is why they only offered 3 yrs, 26 mm same price Flynn got, and if they could've gotten him for the same price Flynn paid it would've been a good signing.

As is with Garrard we again have a nice cheap, experienced depth player.

These kinds of signings are unfortunately necessary as you continue to build a team through the draft. They are the same kinds of signings Pitt does if they ever do go into free agency.

Exactly, look at us, more talented than we were, not to mention Parcells stunted the growth. Since he's been gone Jeff has done well drafting on his own. Biggest draft bust of the regime, Pat White, was well documented to be a Parcells pick, because he fit Parcells' QB criteria

Agreed. BP and his back to the future philosophy has really taken its toll on the phins.

I agree with the fact the timely big signing can help immensely. But you don't want to continuously be doing that. In free agency your essentially over paying for tainted products. Free Agency is like the bar at 4 in the morning. There are a limited amount of players and surely not enough to fill all the holes on NFL rosters, due to this fact agents can easily drive up the price; at the same time most players are free agents for a reason, the team was content to move on because either the player is past his prime, or they feel the player has some sort of deficiency in their game. There is of course the rare cases where a gem (i.e. Drew Brees) does get pushed out, but those cases are few and far between. At least in the draft which is similarly a crapshoot because college player evaluation isn't an exact science and their are innumerous variables, but at least in the draft you don't have to pay that much for these players.

In a salary cap league it is the wisest economical decision by far.

That's hilarious. You describe the vets we let go as old and past their prime then immediately move to Hicks who is just as old and past it yet describe him as depth and experience.

Your point with Pitt makes no sense since they are a perennial playoff team so they can build on their foundation, havent lost many major players of late but when you are a perennial loser as we are in the ireland era you dont get any better with that strategy. Also when you have as much talent as Pittburgh has it helps also. You dont see Pittsburgh getting rid of their best player on offense for nothing and no Santanio Holmes was not their best player, Marshall is far and away our best offensive player. when they let people go they have people ready unlike us. Our talent level and Pittsburgh's is not even close so signing fringe free agents doesnt make us better. Hicks is not better than Carey, not saying much. marshall may be better than Bell or as good. Westerman is nothing special, plus we have lost our starting DE. we have made more holes this offseason than we have filled .

How long do you want us to suffer through this crap? When does it come time to cut bait with Ireland. A team that does not make it to 8-8 every year under your watch is bad no? We are not going in the right direction we are stagnating.
