Will our Dolphins pull the trigger on a FA Running Back? If so, who?

### Running back is not a priority for the Dolphins, but Dolphins executive Dawn Aponte called Tuesday to check in with the firm that represents free agents Ben Tate, Toby Gerhart and Donald Brown. All three had very good per-carry averages last season, and any of those or several others are possibilities at the right price.
A: I've been told by multiple sources that the Dolphins have kicked the tires on all tier one and tier two free agent tailbacks available. They've dipped their toe in the water, exploring what players like Ben Tate, LeGarrette Blount, Maurice Jones-Drew, Darren McFadden and Amhad Bradshaw will be asking for, and looking for. But from what I'm TOLD they hadn't gotten serious about making an offer on the first day of free agency to a tailback. However, that can change at 4 p.m. However, I'm told that new GM Dennis Hickey feels good about his ability to evaluate tailbacks, and would prefer to address the position through the draft, adding another youngster to compete with Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas, Mike Gillislee and Marcus Thigpen. That approach is wise considering tailbacks are like tires and you want someone with more tread on their wheels. However, the Dolphins need to find a tailback that can not only be a productive runner, they need an all-purpose back who can catch passes and produce run after catch yards, and protect the quarterback by being an effective blocker. There's a gamble you're taking with a rookie tailback because most college teams don't have their backs block. It has been years since I saw a college back who could pass protect efficiently. That's why it would be wise for Miami to add a veteran they've seen fill that all-purpose role effectively in the NFL. Signing someone like Jones-Drew would cost Miami something in the neighborhood of $3-4 million a season. Either way I believe the Dolphins, which gained 1,440 rushing yards (4.1 per carry) and scored eight touchdowns in 2013, will be fine. If I were Hickey I'd add an all-purpose veteran and draft a player like Ohio State's Carlos Hyde, Auburn's Tre Mason, LSU's Jeremy Hill, FSU's Davonta Freeman and Boston College's Andre Williams in the second through fifth round of May's draft. Those are the five tailbacks that excite me and I'm certain they could unseat Thomas for one of the team's top tailback spots, if not push Miller aside and become the team's starter in 2014.
