I was just wondering if some of you might know the big names on FA next year?

There are obvious deficiencies on the OL and at LB and in the secondary. In terms of free agency, it's strong on the OL with Max Starks, Mike Gandy outside at RT and LT respectively and then Eric Steinbach, Vince Manuwai, Leonard Davis (LG, LG and RG respectively), then a drop off to someone like Derrick Dockery or Chris Gray. I would imagine very strongly that they will target one of the premier interior lineman from that list. Remember, Steinbach they tried to trade up for the year we drafted Eddie Moore to play LT, whilst Davis was an All Pro at RG his rookie year and then has been played out of position ever since on an awful line. Manuwai is a very strong run blocker and has started all but one game since he was drafted. He'll be the cheaper of the three. I think it would depend just how high they are on Joe Toledo and where they envisage him starting.

At LB, it's Lance Briggs then the rest. Briggs is a premier player, someone I was VERY high on coming out of college. Adalius Thomas is a fine linebacker who really fits the mold of what we're after, weighing in at almost 270 and flourishing in the Ravens 3-4 for the past 2 seasons. Cato June, at just 6ft and 227 is probably too small.

In the secondary, you're looking at Nate Clements and Asante Samuel as the top two available. Nick Harper, Randall Gay, Jordan Babineaux and Jason David are all in that mix although the latter are RFA's. At safety, Michael Lewis is the star name, whilst Ken Hamlin and Deon Grant are all FA's, whilst the excellent Gibril Wilson is a RFA. Only Lewis and Wilson are SS's, as we have Jason Allen at FS. Lewis will be one of the premier players on offer. Depending on Wilson's tender, the comp for him might only be a 5th rounder, although that would be staggeringly unlikely.

Boom,
Do you think Steinbach can be a force at LT? The bengals should have a hard time keeping him with all the $$ they have invested in their tackles.

The Fins should try to go after Adalis Thomas. Briggs and Cato June are both Tampa 2 style LBs. And Brooks and Quarles are getting a bit old.....

Well we certainly scouted him as a tackle. He has the footwork and quickness to play out there, but it was interesting to see that the Bengals put Andrew Whitworth in at LT last week and moved Steinbach back to LG (he'd been playing OC when Rich Braham got hurt), rather than putting the more experienced player protecting Carson's blind side. I just think this team has had enough of square pegs and round holes to be honest. If we pick him up, I think we play him at his best position and then one he's played at a very decent level at for 4 years, which is LG.

That said, he started there at KC, but like I said, I think he's best suited inside.

Thanks for the input, I liked him a bunch when he was coming out in the draft. Too bad we got Eddie Moore instead:boohoo:

No worries.

I think it was just too high for us to try and shift up. He was such great value for the Bengals at that spot.

Thanx Boomer.

We're about $25.7 million under a projected 2007/8 cap of $109 million. Nobody knows what the salary cap will be for next year as it doesn't get set until each spring. All we know is that it will be more than this year and the rumour is that $109 is the number.

That said, there are only 36 players under contract for next year. And more will be released. So while being that far under is great, we're gonna have to use a portion of it to sign the 17 final players it'll take to fill the roster, which will include a high 1st round pick.

But there will be money to play with.
