Because if you look at the history of ball hawking free safeties - like Ed Reed, Darren Sharper, Ronnie Lott - virtually all were ball hawks in college. It's virtually unheard of for a guy to be stone handed in college, and in the NFL for a few years, then suddenly become a ball hawking free safety later in his NFL career.
If Chris Clemons turns around and becomes a ball hawking free safety, it will be the first time in NFL history.
All I'm saying is, as great as it would be to have a "ball hawk" at FS, I am not willing to give up consistency for it. I think Reshad Jones has to be heads and shoulders better than Clemmons to win the job and honestly I haven't seen enough of either guy in the preseason, hell our secondary has not been tested at all in the preseason.
When it comes to the basics, Clemmons is head and shoulders above Jones . . . Jones brings that "wildcard" ability that I think Mike Nolan wants from his FS. If Jones wins the job, I'm cool with it, but if you are asking me who I "think" should be starting, I think its Clemmons. We don't need any surprises on this defense, we know our weakness last year was in the middle of the field . . . our secondary was very consistent with the occassional lapse . . . I don't wanna have that middle of the field problem fixed and then have a guy back there teams are picking on.
