Free Safety spot still open

Clemons is just OK, and that's the problem. He hasn't ever made a play that I said "WOW". Though he has made plays where I said "C'mon Man!" like the INT that bounced off his hands, off his foot and up into the receiver's hands for a TD. He hasn't ever made a play that Jones couldn't make; He has taken bad angles, he has been beaten in coverage and his missed tackles so let's not pretend he's some rock back there.

If Clemons takes bad angles and gets beaten in coverage, Jones takes the worst possible angles of all time and gets burned constantly.

Look no further than the Bears game last year to see some of the worst angles I have seen taken by a single high safety in a long time.

I would rather have someone back there who will make the INT when it is handed to us. They will both make mistakes at some point, but I'd rather have a free safety who can catch. If Reshad stinks it up and gets beat, then he'll get pulled and I wouldn't have a problem with that. We can do much worse than Clemons, but I feel like Reshad gives us a chance to create some turnovers that we were severely lacking last year.

I rather have no liabilities on defense, and I think Jones is much more of a liabllitiy than Clemmons. Now that being said, maybe Reshad has gotten better in the offseason, but based on last year, Clemmons is my guy at FS.

I'm pulling for Reshad Jones.

Clemons has maxed out. He's always had stone hands. He wasn't a ball hawk in college, and he isn't a ball hawk in the NFL. He's just a containment guy.

A ball hawking free safety would really complete our defense. I'm hoping Reshad Jones is that man.

"Much More" of a liability? What game footage have you seen to come to that conclusion? I watched every game last year and didn't see anything like that. The fact that the competition is still open is a testament to the fact that they are both regarded as starting caliber.

I don't see how you could say a guy is "maxed out" after 2 years in the NFL, making huge strides from year 1 to year 2. What is stopping the guy from making more strides in year 3? He as the closing speed and he is physical.

I know Reshad made some great plays in a few games last year . . . but he is gonna be targeted, and if he hasn't improved from last year . . . he is gonna get abused.

Sparano even said it . . . you have the consistent guy against the guy who is more likely to get you a big play but more likely to give up a big play.

Don't see how you can compare one guy who started 16 games to a guy who didn't get nearly the snaps of the other guy. I don't have to see game footage, I know Reshad Jones would have been a liability as the starter at FS last year. He wasn't ready for that.

Sparano also said Wake was too much a liability in the run game so we kept plodding Joey Porter out there.

Having a stone-handed FS like Clemons is a liability.

Watch as Clemons get hit with a pass, an apparent gift interception.. but oops he bobbles it, pops it up, and gives Terrell Owens an undeserved TD.

All players have lowlights . . . it wasn't a good moment for Chris, but he was all over the play. What was that? Like his 7th game starting. Clemmons was consistent . . . yea he had his mistakes but he brought some stability to the FS position. I'm sorry, I remember what it was to have a liability at FS in 2009, and it wasn't fun. Factor in the potential room for Clemmons to still grow, I just think he is a better option at FS.

I have nothing against Jones, I want him at SS soon . . . but at FS, meh, I'll go with Chris Clemmons.

Wake was a liability in the run in 2009, and he was in 2010 as well, though he improved alot from year 1 to year 2.

Joey Porter starred the year before in the same defense.

Because if you look at the history of ball hawking free safeties - like Ed Reed, Darren Sharper, Ronnie Lott - virtually all were ball hawks in college. It's virtually unheard of for a guy to be stone handed in college, and in the NFL for a few years, then suddenly become a ball hawking free safety later in his NFL career.

If Chris Clemons turns around and becomes a ball hawking free safety, it will be the first time in NFL history.

For one thing, I think Wake proved he could hold his own against the run. And two, does it matter? it would be like not playing Ed Reed because hes not the best in run support.

Extreme example here . . . if Reshad Jones looks like Ed Reed on one play and Girbril Wilson on another play . . . and Clemmons just plays steady and doesn't make mental mistakes, but doesn't make big plays . . . . who would you prefer?

Clemons without a doubt in that scenario

I didn't bring up Cam Wake, the other guy did . . . I was just pointing out to him that Wake "was" a liability against the run in 2009 and in 2010 he improved but he still misdiagnoses run plays. You are right, it doesn't matter, he is a stud now.
