Free Safety

http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/10/21/2466040/miami-dolphins-defense.html

The article talks of the Fins "not having much experience" at the FS spot tomorrow. However, I think they will play just fine. Tyrone Culver should have been give a shot a long time ago, but also this admin has been brutal evaluating that position. I could argue it is the spot this FO has messed up the most with...

It amazes me how bad this FO is in evaluating Free Safeties. First, they devalue Reinaldo Hill from his 2008 season by letting him walk and replacing him with Gibril Wilson...holy **** did Wilson suck. Then they went to Chris Clemons eventually, who was steady at best. In the meantime, remember Jeff Ireland blew the signing of Ryan Clark who is better than anything we have had. Finally, Reshad Jones is elevated. a I keep hearing how he is "around the ball". All I see is him out of position and trailing on plays. I see him selling out his corners with bad angles to the ball.

Culver will be fine and I am interested in Gerald Alexander...why not?

The team has many needs, but a rock solid FS might really help the overall defense in big ways going into next year.

What happened to the Reshad Jones is a ballhawk chants!

Not directing this at you Phinatic8u, but in general the entire forums was obsessed with thinking Jones was even NFL material at the FS spot.

But I would like to say TedSlimm and hoops did not prove me wrong on this...I knew from the start he would be a bum. No range and a terrible communicator.

didnt we sign alexander and then release him like a day later?

he was a ballhawk in his time last year. not too much reason to think it couldnt carry over into this year. i thought at the minimum he would be serviceable but never thought he was better than clemons

What is becoming a critical position on D is another position they continue to try and find late round gems. Letting Hill walk after 2008 was bad but not signing Ryan Clark then passing on Earl Thomas is just another example of how clueless Ireland is. Clemens is steady but the new regime has to make this a priority.

This it's what happened:

Sparano: "So Gerald how was your time with the Cowboys?"
Alexander: "I never played for the Cowboys
Sparano: "hum ok"
Sparano: "Irish I though he played for mighty Cowboys, cut him now''

Where have you gone, Brock Marion? A fanbase turns its lonely eyes to you, hey hey hey. Hey hey hey...

umm ryan clark isnt really good in coverage.

if ur mad be mad we passed on earl thomas for odrick and overrated misi

nickle back is worse imo, they still sign will allen and nate jones 3 years later... atleast they tried with free safety (alas horribly)... Hill, Gibril, blowing it on clark and rolle and earl thomas, reshad, clemons culver bell alexander.... yikes.

clearly they have no interest in someone who can cover or catch.

i think vontae is good not great, i think sean smith hasn't plotted out well enough. i think they dont even TRY to find a nickle because they know they cant.

He wasn't a ballhawk in his time last year. He had 2 plays in the Titans game because Vince Young is possibly the worst quarterback of all time. If he played Vince Young every game, then yes he would be a ballhawk.

In the Chicago game, he was on full display of his terrible range, communication, and angles.

Free safety is one of the biggest needs on this team.

The Earl Thomas trade down was a fiasco so far.

I thought Clemons was decent.

Having seen K St a few times this yr (including as I type), Tysyn Hartman could be a good one.

Though, he appears to be built like a SS. Worst case scenario is he succeeds Y Bell.

Yea he has always been more suited as Y Bell's replacement and he should already be serving his second year as his backup instead of probalby being switched at the end of the year.

He has always taken bad angles/limited recovery speed and I agree he made 2 plays in the Titans game that got people on his dick and that is why he was getting alot of support around here. Truth is, Clemmons isn't anything special but he was solid enough for this defense last year, a defense that has struggled finding a decent FS post Brock Marion.

All I know is we were a top 10 pass Defense last year with Clemons back there and this year our pass D looks awful without him.

Clemons might not be flashy but I think he's very underrated back there.
